Just post a question that you dn't want to start a whole thread for.

I'll start,

Is a "Soviet" a Russian? Or does it have to be a communist Russian. Or am I totally off base alltogether?

1. Soviet refers to communist, not necessarily Russian

Although Russia was the largest country within the USSR, there were many others (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, the "stans", Belorus, Ukraine), so many people used the terms "Russian" and "Soviet" interchangably and would be right most of the time.

Technically, the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore, but people still use the term "Soviet" to describe those who were communists.

Gets a bit more technical, but that's prob all you want to know.
