My Dad is in ICU...on kidney dialysis and comatose...

.....underwent a bone marrow transplant a month ago and now his body is shutting down...he and my mom are in Dallas at Baylor Medical Center and I'm bein' assured they're doin' everything they can for him...I'm beside m'self with worry as I can't be there for them...I sit here at work and am just sick..emotionally drained and tryin' not to squall. :cry:

You should think about you and your family right now. Dont feel greedy for doing it. What is your nearest airport? That being said, I can understand if you dont want to take off and staying busy helps you keep your mind off this. We all have different ways of dealing with pain.. none better or worse then others.

I've been in your position a couple times.It's really draining. Make sure you take care of yourself during this period as well. It sounds trite, but try to keep some of your typical day-to-day structure in your life. It keeps you from dwelling on things too much, as if you can dwell on anything else, right!? I think it was good that you were at work today, actually. One can really feel a loss of control in this situation, and maintaining your normal daily activities, hard as it may be, gives you a sense of control over something.

Where is your mom staying? Baylor has a special hotel for family/friends of patients that's onsite at the medical complex. The rooms are less expensive than standard hotels, and since it's on-site, there's no need to commute between a hotel and the hospital in a strange city. Here's a link:

Finally, if your father has a phone in the room, have your mom hold the phone up to your dad's ear and let you talk to him. I just read an article written by a doctor who was in a coma for a period of time. It was written for health care professionals to educate them on the "dos" and "don'ts" of caring for patients in a coma. He related that he could hear EVERYTHING that was being said.
