Boy, that gunshot was REALLY close
:scared: I SWEAR it sounded as if it wizzed right by here.

Today is the first day of deer hunting and I've been hearing shots all morning. It kind of sounds like a war zone. But for heaven sakes they could take it a little farther away from my backyard!

19. My neighbors would love that!
My end of the street is pretty middle class, but farther down there are alot of out-of-statah snobs who live on the lake. I don't think they'd like driving by a hunter orange house every day. It would be kind of funny though.

4. According to hunting regulations
They aren't allowed to hunt within a certain distance of occupied buildings. What state are you in? Check the DNR or state wildlife Web site for the hunting rules and see what your rights are.

5. It wasn't me, MM, I swear.
Just got back inside. Saw three does, no bucks. Quite a difference from a just a couple of years ago when I'd fill my ticket in the first few hours of opening day. But there again I'm out in the northern boonies.

Tis the season when all Mainers are dressed in Orange.

13. Yeah the herd is not doing very well
in some northern areas, but it's better then last year. No any-deer permits still though in much of the northern part of my legislative district. They gave out 1200 here in my area but across the rivah ovah ta Solon ;-) they gave out something like 7000 of them. SO and all but one of his friends got one (an any-deer permit)

Where are you hunting?

15. My Backyard
Have about 80 acres on the side of a hill. Got a small apple orchard, so I just go out and sit and watch that area. I've been lucky enough over the past few years to got some nice bucks early in the season, but this year I've seen nothing but does and lambs.

I've never been big on hunting does. Rather have a hat rack and some deer meat.

I'm up in Lincoln

8. Remember the woman with the white mittens?
She lived in suburban Auburn,I think. She was out in her dooryard and was shot and killed by a hunter. He said that because of her white mittens,he thought she was a deer.

11. Sorry, that's slightly wrong
First, it was outside Bangor.

Second, she ran thru the woods waving her white mittens in a manner that looked a lot like a deer's tail will wave whenjumped.

Third, she was not on her land, but on an abutting piece of property.

Fourth, the hunter in question and his partner had just jumped a couple of does prior to the accident.

Because of this incident there are very strict rules in place now. Blaze orange requirements, etc. And failure to properly id your target is a big legal No-No.

Hunting is not quite the same up here as a result. And IMHO thats a good thing.

17. That "F'ng Guy
was a Boy Scout Troopmaster, a deacon at his church, and a well respected member of the community.

As for the verdict, this was basicly a hunting accident, with both sides at fault. One good result was a tightening up of the laws in this state. One bad result was not only Karen Wood's death, but the hell that he went thru. As far as I know he has never hunted again.

41. 37 y.o. mother of young twins shot 45 yards behind her home
wearing white mittens- (see page 6/page 10)

I am not sympathetic to Mr. Rogerson's carelessness in sighting a target. Of course, worse things have happened- a father fatally shot his son due to such capricious shooting in the woods.

18. Ok,Bangor...
Sorry for that error...however,everything I've read about it says that she was bringing in laundry, which I suppose she may have had hanging on an abutting piece of property. Why would she have been running through the woods waving her white mittens? Sounds like that may have been the hunter's view of things...that I really do believe. I'll have to try and find some official documentation on this,I guess.

23. I tried that..
Unfortunately, the archives only go back to 1993. All I could find on google was a Court TV reference, which did mention the laundry, and another article which mentioned it. I don't consider these official sources,so I will keep looking. I was very nearly shot by a hunter on my property in Lovell..very near my house...so am probably not objective.

24. Lovell, ME?
Kezar Lake is a great spot. I grew up near there in the early 60's.

I've been shot at by other hunters also and most of my friends who hunt can tell stories about that too. Most of the time it falls into one of two types.........outa-state'rs or young idjots that really really want that first deer.

But 99.9% of hunters try to be as safe about the sport as they can be.

I lived on Coffin Brook Road, the road off Rte 5 that's across from the road going down to the lake. You're right,Kezar Lake is beautiful...one of the cleanest lakes in the country. I grew up in Portland, and lived in N Lovell when I was married, for about 7 years.
You're right about the hunters...in my case,it was a guy from NYC:)

That's on an island, but I don't remember if it's the north end or not...it's the only one I know of. We stopped there in our boat once and checked it out...it was strange...old mags and stuff from the 40s,and in the bathroom really old medicines and things from WW II era. It was a like a time warp. Yes,we were trespassing....however,my husband was thinking of buying the place at the time.

37. The place
Had two docks, an east side (facing towards the middle of the lake) and a west side that facied a bog inland. There was a smaller island a few hundred yards north with a small cabin on it.

The house was a two story affair with a large living room, kitchen etc downstairs and several bedrooms upstairs. There was a boat house on the shore.

As I said this was during the early 60's (62-63), I think. We spent several summers there and for a young kid who loved nature, hunting and fishing (and still does) it was heaven.

It was not so open. I'm friends with some folks who lived on that street at the time. Back where it happened was thick with brush, alders, small pines, etc.

The newspapers published aerial photos and made it appear to be open, but from eye level it was pretty thick.

I found a hunter-orange vest that says on the back (no lie) "DO NOT SHOOT. I AM A MAN." I added a "Wo" to "man" well, because that's what I am. Sometimes I wear it for a goof when I trek into the "big city".

32. We've had hunters' bullets whizzing INTO houses here recently
Formerly rural area west of Philadelphia (Western Chester County) PA.

The combination of too many people, upscale houses built of ticky-tacky, and the dilution of the old hunter culture.

You have incredibly stupid people out there with guns and not a clue of what it's all about. The one nearest me was bullet holes in the wall above the (empty) baby crib.

Oh yes, they are prosecuted, but there's a new crop of idiots every year.

And it's sort of the way drunk driving was a few years ago. Nobody takes it very seriously because it's "just hunters."

By the way for the record, we have hunters on our land every year. We have long-term relationships with each of them. They know what they're doing and are passing thier skill and hunting ethic along to their children. But that doesn't stop the idiots.

35. A couple years ago, my (rural Indiana) sister
heard a strange noise in her house. Upon looking around, she discovered a bullet lodged in the wall of her bathroom, next to the throne.

Her five year old son had been sitting there just a minute before it happened. He was lucky that day-- the bullet was at the exact height his head would have been at.
