1. we went to Key West in 1998
and I took a buttload of pictures of a glorious sunset one evening...using the black and white film I forgot I'd put in the camera.

2. lol
There is some kind of strange irony Key West must exude. Skinner posted the other night that the Key Lime Pie he had in Key West was not very good - that he got better in DC. :-)

3. Ah, but did you know that there are no Key Lime trees left
in the Florida Keys? They all got wiped out in a hurricane quite some time ago.

All of the "Key Limes" you can buy these days come from Mexico. But don't worry, they're the same fruit as the old Key Lime was.

Furthermore, those small, yellowish "Key Limes" from Mexico are the only REAL limes you're likely to find in the US. Those bright-green things you see in the grocery store, labeled limes? They're not. They're green lemons.

Truth.

4. Ok
I was just passing his story along... I have never been to FLA, let alone Key West. :-)

5. I wasn't criticizing you, just pointing out the reason
why he could very well have gotten a better Key Lime pie in DC than in Key West.

9. A common, but mistaken perception.
Key limes citrus aurantifolia are not much cultivated in Florida owing specifically to the rather ferocious nature of the bushes they grow on. The 12 foot bushes bear rather fierce, inch-long thorns that tear the flesh off of those trying to cultivate. A thornless variety exists, but offers substantially less fruit.

Mexican and West Indian Limes are genetically identical to that which we call the Key Lime, and there seems to be far less resistence in those areas of the world to cultivating the little devils regardless of their spikey habitat.

The vast majority of limes sold in the U.S. are Persian or Tahaitian Limes citrus latifola. They are true limes and not green lemons at all, but their flavour is not the deep, rich one offered by the aurantifolia. Even in Florida, many who think they've had a slice of Key Lime Pie have actually had Persian Lime Pie and it's no wonder they think of it as no great shakes.

:hi:

10. I'll be damned. I've seen the information that I passed along
in half-a-dozen places, and it sounds like all of them were wrong; I have no reason to doubt that you are correct, because it sounds like you've done your research.

So how is it that I, a voracious reader, managed to hear a story that isn't the real case, over and over? Is this some kind of Limegate?

Just out of curiosity, why do you suppose that the story I had read so many times has become more popular than the true story that you posted? I'm really interested in your opinion on this, and truly appreciate your correction of the incorrect facts in my post.

Damn, I hate it when I seem to know what I'm talking about, and I don't. Curse those SOBs who told me the 'limes destroyed by a hurricane" myth.

7. That's truly beautiful...
I could see myself enjoying a nice salad and glass of wine watching that. I could really enjoy a nice breeze.
