The dumbest spelling error in the history of the world: "Opps."

I've seen people use the word "opps" for "oops" more times than I can count. It seems like one of the easiest words in the languange to spell correctly: Long "u" vowel sound, flat "ps" sound to follow. "Oops."

And yet, I CONSTANTLY see normally intelligent people spell the word with two "p'"s. Why? Is the "o" sound in the word short to some ears? Is it an ironic way of playing on the definition of the word "oops?"

I am also a spelling fanatic. As a Realtor, I also see 'dinning' for 'dining', 'finnished' for 'finished', etc. My typing isn't great and I often type 'remeber' for 'remember' but that is a finger foible.

Every time I see it, I see "oops" because of this exact spelling mistake. Somehow, it seems appropriate, given that we are around to fix broken things. :-)
