Your neighborhood on the 4th of July

What is it like where you live on the 4th of July?

Here on Long Island (or LongGiland as we pronounce it)we load up on the fireworks, food, and beer, baby. We don't need to go anywhere - our neighborhood alone is a fireworks festival!

It's always kind of frightening for non-drinkers like me because we watch as these people take their lives in their hands as they set off rockets and shells. They also must all be rich because this area alone must fire off thousands of dollars worth of fireworks. Technically they are illegal and we're but a mile from the police station. The police are far too busy scraping other revelers off of the streets however. They have little time for us.


One year the Fuji Blimp went by flying kind of low - there were shells going off all around it - how they made it without sustaining a direct hit I don't know ...

In other words - we have a blast! :patriot:

1. Two choices: Watch a big show, or watch illegal amateur stuff

Either way it's a lot of fun.

2. We have the big show at the park, fireworks and orchestra

we always have a bbq at my house but at night we go out front and we can see the fireworks from the big show.

3. I go to my parent's lake house

at the Lake of The Ozarks. Everything is legal there and people take advantage of that. Their neighbors set off M-80's all day long and the resort the next cove over does a professional display on the 4th. It's really fun to be on the lake in a boat watching thousands of people set off fireworks on the shore.

4. My neighborhood sounds like Beirut.

I spend much of the evening hoping nobody gets hurt nor burns anything down, while I try to keep the dogs quiet.

5. Block party

It's a laid back, fireworks free event with a three block race for the kids followed by a parade back down the race route, a mailbox decorating contest, and a big barbecue without open drunkenness. This is California however so plenty of wine is consumed. We can hear and see the municipal fireworks. After 9/11 one of the neighbors distributed little flags and most people dutifully plant them on the lawn each year.

6. My town is on a lake, we can watch the big fireworks over the lake

and the neighbors fireworks from our driveway. Three to four thousand people pile into our little town of three thousand on that day. It's not much fun trying to use a car.

9. My hometown used to have fireworks, a parade, a carnival,

you name it- which is pretty impressive for a town of 1,000. People would come out of the woodwork for the festivities, and I'd usually hang out and barbecue with my friends from school. Sadly, there will be none of that this year, because the city council spends too much time bickering to organize something.
