FREE JOHN DOE! (Law & Order last night)
Anybody see Law & Order last evening? Sometimes Alice actually succeeds at getting me to watch network tv (not that I'm a tv snob; I just can't stand the commercials) and last night we got a big kick out of John Doe playing the leader of a washed-up heavy metal band involved in a (RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES!) fatal nightclub fire. John's character was charged, but I got bored with the trial and went up to bed. I thought I overheard the 40-year-old teenage groupie confessing to her mom, but Alice was blogging rather than following the plot and wasn't sure how it all turned out. Did anybody see this? Was John convicted, or just reprimanded for making "Ain't Love Grand?"?

1. it doesnt say
remember: they were not able to impeach the girl's testimony at trial. The jury had no idea the girl was lying. I thought this episode was "Law and Order, for Law and Order's sake"
Normally their usual plot twists leave you shocked, etc. Someone has a sinister motive, or something. This girl's idea of just wanting to please "daddy" and the mother being one of his groupies wasn't really shocking, nor did it make that much sense as to why she did it. "I heard you ask for more. I just wanted to make you happy"
or some such drek.

If I were in the jury, this guy would be acquitted. The evidence presented, which went uncontested, put him elsewhere at the time.
it was a very bla episode. but at least i got to watch family guy at its conclusion.

2. Nothing wrong with "Ain't Love Grand"!!!!!
I love seeing John Doe in acting roles. Aside from X being one of my favorite bands, I think he's a pretty decent character actor. My favorite roles of his were in the movies Georgia and also his brief role in Boogie Nights.

And Ain't Love Grand is far too maligned. There are some great songs on there, just mired in hair metal production.

3. Terrific actor, singer, songwriter
I liked "Ain't Love Grand?," saw them for the first time on that tour, and was a total pushover for "I'll Stand Up For You." If you don't have it, get a hold of "Dim Stars, Bright Sky"; generally really excellent.

4. I've been meaning to pick that up...
Much as I love Exene and the interplay between her and John in the context of X, his singing and songwriting was always my favorite aspect of the band.

5. OK- here's what happened
The girl confessed to doing it- she was not a groupie- she was his daughter as a result of her mother's one-night stand of long ago. She knew that he wanted to be back on top- and she was backstage (via her father sending her 2 backstage passes a year) and overheard the conversation about making the pyros higher to gain more notice and acclaim thus returning them back to the "glory days". She overpacked the 6th cylinder for him- basically, so he would love her. He basically let her take the rap and left her standing there. BASTARD !!

7. Hey, great idea!
Love the weepy ones (Take 42, My Offering) as well as Worldwide Brotherhood. First John Doe Thing record is excellent as well, also his latest, mentioned above. "Freedom Is...," however, didn't quite work.
