81. i loved her "old" voice too
i first saw her live in 1988, and fell in love immediately with that sound. it took awhile to get used to her younger voice when i went back and listened to her old Decca and Kapp recordings. now i just love them all. i have well over 100 Carmen McRae records and CDs.

11. sometime consider checking out Boston's best jazz show's
playlists

http://www.wgbh.org/schedules/episode-list?program_id=30367&view_previous=1

"Eric in the Evening" starts every show with a really lovely song called "Peace" by Tommy Flanagan off "Something Borrowed, Something Blue." I used to dance to it every evening but probably is not really as appropriate for Saturday early afternoon.

Have a great show !!!

45. I've not seen the Jimmy Smith version of "Peter and the Wolf"
on CD. Progmom, you must know the people at Verve well enough to get influence some reissues. There are also some Verve Lalo Schiffrin albums that never made it to CD. You know what I mean?

The Duck on Peter and the Wolf was the loudest, funkiest, big band vs. Hammond vs. rhythm section I ever heard.

BTW, I saw Oscar Brown on Broadway, with wife Jean Pace and Sivuca. It was a great show but I forget the name.

I have a few Sivuca CD's you need to hear. One was a show that he and Rosinha de Valença did in Rio in '77. It's so beautiful, it almost makes me cry when I listen to it.

Another is "The Essential Airto" (1970) with Airto, Flora, Hermeto, Sivuca, Dom Um Romão, and Ron Carter. A shimmering gem.

Any cover of the old Ivory Joe Hunter song will do, though I'm partial to the Willy DeVille version.

This request may fall too far on the blues side of great music to fit your jazz format. Let me know if this is the case, and I'll try again later, or next week!

And whenever you have a minute, let me know if my request actually fits your format. I listen to more blues than straight jazz, but there is so much overlap I thought this one might fit. I just want to be prepared for next Saturday's show with a request that makes sense!

Good show today.

78. they are both amazing
but when betty would play that live, she'd let her band go off and get down for real.
she was an amazing band leader. over the years she found and schooled some amazing young musicians.
what a legacy she left behind.

79. Bessie Smith: Pig Foot and a Bottle of Beer
If that doesn't pass the station's censors, I'll settle for Ms. Smith's rendition of The St. Louis Blues, which also features Louis Armstrong on trumpet.
