Poll question: Do you prefer mayonnaise or Miracle Whip?
My mother adored Miracle Whip, so naturally, today her daughters eat mayonnaise. :p

1. Miracle Whip when I'm making a sandwich at home, and
mayo when I'm dining out.

3. Same here
I found a wonderful whole-egg mayonnaise recipe in The Joy Of Cooking, and it's made in a blender. I use extra-virgin olive oil, and I always throw in a few fresh garlic cloves, too.

Ever read the ingredients in things like Kraft or Hellman's mayonnaise, or Miracle Whip (which I love)? When I saw "high fructose corn syrup," I knew it was time to make my own.

Take a few minutes, and it's so well worth it.

26. The pleasure is mine
You'll never go near commercial mayonnaise again, I promise ---

Blender Mayonnaise

(Never try to make mayonnaise when a thunderstorm is threatening – it will not bind.)

Put in blender jar:

1 egg
1 tsp ground mustard
1 tsp salt
a dash of cayenne pepper
1 tsp sugar
1/4 Cup olive oil
as many cloves of fresh garlic as you like – I like three

Cover and blend until thoroughly combined. With the blender still running, take off the cover, and slow add:

1/4 Cup olive oil

and then:

3 Tbs freshly squeezed lemon juice

until thoroughly blended. Then, add slowly:

1/2 Cup olive oil

and blend until thick. You may have to stop and start the blender to stir down the mayonnaise.

I use extra-virgin olive oil - regular makes for a heavier result, which I don't especially like.

I now use my Cuisinart to make this, but the blender works just as well.

27. boy! that sounds good...
I will definitely give this a try. My grandmother used to make her own mayonnaise, but I failed to get the recipe from her before she passed away. Yours sounds very tasty and easy to boot! I am saving the recipe. Thanks for the tip about not making it during bad weather. I had never heard this before... :hi:

5. I like both.
I like Miracle Whip with tuna, but I prefer mayonnaise with egg salad.

As sandwich spread, I'll take either, depending on my mood.

I love fancy mustards with horseradish in them and I always keep some plain horseradish in the refrigerator.

12. Thumbs down on Miracle Whip
It is, like so many food 'products' a totally manufactured ersatz thing.
Why bother with it? It bears as much resemblance to real mayonnaise as Coors lite bears to genuine beer.

14. Mayon Plastics
When I was a kid we used to drive by a Miracle Whip factory in Hopkins MN. There was a giant jar of Miracle Whip sitting in the front yard of the factory. Over the side door were big red letters announcing "Mayon Plastics". This was a tip off. We make (I should say my dear wife) mayonaise with eggs and olive oil and some other stuff I think and it's really good.

No joke. It's happened to me like 3 times when someone put mayonnaise on something after I asked them not to.
