OK intrepid and informed DUers, can someone please tell me why cats feel the need to frequently flash their bottom at you? I know that they will sniff your breath because that's how kittens learn what to eat, but when Cali the Wonder Tabby flips around to display her furry pumpkin butt, what is she trying to say?

Of course, other than "kiss my ass, blondie!"

1. Whent they are kittens, that is how their mothers

stimulate them to poop. So maybe since you are bonded to that cat in very much the same way a ktten bonds with its mom, she may think your going to help her poop. Comforting, eh?

2. She thinks you are her mommy.

Kittens do that to their mothers; she's transferred that role to you. Sniffing each other's bottoms is a prime way cats transmit information about themselves and learn about other cats. They can tell age, rank in a group, health, and, obviously, gender by sniffing bottoms. When my cats do that, I just scratch them on their backs right by the tail and they love it.
