Edited on Wed May-25-05 03:56 PM by tjdee
There's just something about him, he's not my usual type, but he is extremely sexy, IMO.

Anyhoo, I'm making my way through his films, and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for non-Shahrukh films.

I'm a little afraid of pre-1996 films, from what I've seen--the production values are kind of scary. I just watched Rangeela :scared: it seemed more random than the newer films I've seen and enjoyed (people coming up out of the forest??).

My favorites so far have been...uh...basically Shahrukh films...and Dil Chailte Hai. I love the musical sequences. I love seeing the actors get down with their bad selves!

2. I love Bollywood for the dance numbers.
Beautiful women in beautiful costumes dancing in synch. It doesn't get much better than that.

A lot of the music's pretty great, too.

4. Yeah I know...you'll never see Nicole Kidman doing that, LOL.
Once in a while, I'd like to see George Clooney shake his booty, that's all I'm saying.

The costumes are gorgeous, the colors are gorgeous...I'm so glad I caught Bollywood week on TCM. I never would have known how delightful some Indian cinema is.

5. One of my favorite shows is now online!
Used to get AVS when I lived in Vancouver, but they don't show it on my cable service on Vancouver Island. I just discovered that they broadcast their shows online now. Check it out!

6. YES. Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam and Mission Kashmir.
Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's last film prior to Devdas (you didn't mention Devdas, but you MUST have seen it, since it's a Shah Rukh Khan film and probably the best tragedy and one of the best films ever made, anywhere).

Hum Dil was a Salman Khan / Aishwarya (sp?) Rai film and the music, sets and dancing were incredible. Also a great love story. Mission Kashmir starred Hrithik Roshan and Priety Zinta, and was a bit corny/jarring by western standards (what with the terrorism plot joined with the musical aspect), but ditto for the sets and numbers.

7. Mmm...Devdas...
I've not seen it though. I know it'll be amazing and Sharukh is probably amazing, etc., but I can't bring myself to watch a tragedy lately.

Hum Dil is on my Netflix queue...but I've heard Salman Khan was a bit of a jerk to Aishwarya and that kind of sours me on watching him for a long time. But I have heard good things about it before...may have to move it up.

Have never heard of Mission Kashmir. Priety Zina was in Veer Zaara (with Sharukh, great film), and I liked her. Will look it up.

Thank you so much, it's hard to sort through the many films sometimes, even with the different ratings and different sites.

9. What really makes these two is the music.
And Salman, well, he's Salman. He plays the light-hearted, rather juvenile, young lover... and then a "competitor" comes into the picture (Ajay Devgan, who's great in it), and she has to choose. I won't give anything away, though.

As for Devdas and tragedy, it's apparently one of the great tragedies of literature, and the quintessential Indian novel. It IS tragic (even by Hindi film standards), but it is also great. And the music is great in it, as well. Especially Devdas and HDDCS have more traditional music, which I like much better.

I'm pretty clear on the story, but I think I've confused who plays who. Is Ajay is the guy she marries? If that's the case, I'll definitely move it up. :)

Devdas...oh Devdas...I too like the traditional music and dancing...but I kind of dig the western influence of the newer modern day films, at times.
Maybe I'll catch Devdas and follow it up with a really light Chalte Chalte or something.

26. Yes, she chooses Ajay.
That's what makes it so perfect. She "grows up", and makes the mature choice (the guy who TRULY loves her, in a much deeper way, not just infatuation). She leaves immature little Salman to mope forever!

Alrighty then, that's moving up to number 2 on my queue.
I was for some reason under the impression that Salman played her husband.

I must not be seeing the right ones!

The ones I've seen have been very, very tame--except for Veer Zaara, which was very sexy in one part, although still...very, very tame compared to what it would have been in a Hollywood film. And as the above poster said, there was still no kissing.

Hm!

I'm kind of digging his romances lately, and from what I've read, Swades is about some nationalism and stuff :eyes: LOL.

But then, it does have him in it. What to do, what to do.

29. I liked it
It was a little over 3 hours, and it does have a romance in it.

it was about taking pride in your country, but at the same time he addressed changing culture and tradition to correct wrongs. Kind of like Lagaan and the whole caste system.

I liked the girl:-)

I'm thinking if I want to sit through a cricket match.
I've heard that's really good, though.

And I'm not saying I'd consider it because Amir Khan is gorgeous.

Thanks for the positive feedback--you cried, but did Shahrukh? Apparently he's got a reputation for being a 'good crier'. I don't know if I notice that--he seems to be like any other actor in that regard.
