This was a real suck ass day
I got fired over the phone on my way to work.

I already had an appointment with the food stamp people, which was set up when I was out on medical leave. The one good piece of news - I'm getting food stamps. The bad news - they won't give me TANF because my husband's car is worth too much. I have no idea how I'm supposed to buy toilet paper and laundry detergent, let alone pay the rent and such.

My mother in law called to say that she's taking away the gas cards that we use. They're in her name, but I was paying the bill. Due to the financial situation, I ca't pay, so bye-bye cards. She's also threatening to take away my car (financed in her name) if I don't have money for the insurance.

My husband took off to a friend's house after I told him about the conversation with his mom. I guess he's pissed at me for getting fired...not like he has a job or anything.

So, I'm home, kids asleep, TV on, and miserable. The cats aren't even paying attention to me.

Oh, and ever since I got the call this morning, my stomach has been turning flips that Immodium won't touch.

This day has just sucked ass.

4. Yeah, I plan to do that tomorrow
Today, I filed for unemployment and spent three and a half hours at the food stamp place.

3. boy, you sure did have a sucky day!
that is horrible! I read your earlier thread when you just heard over the phone about your termination. I am so sorry to hear that. I am wondering if that is even legal, especially when it wasn't your boss that called with that news? Do you have any sort of an attorney friend that you could ask? It sounds like your situation is dire, but I would definitely ask an attorney, BEFORE cashing your last check, as this could signal some sort of acceptance of the situation.

What is with your MIL? Why would she do this just now, especially when you are so in need?

What is TANF? is this different from food stamps? Do food stamps only cover food items, not the toilet paper, etc? Do you have a church you can call tomorrow? Just trying to think of a plan... I know our church has a food bank, and will help out if you are in a pinch. Also, check into Second Harvesters; they are a food bank, but have many more items available than just food stuffs.

Maybe your husband was overwhelmed with the situation, and just honestly didn't know what to do or say.

I am sending you lots of hugs, 'cuz it seems like you REALLY need some just now!

7. Thanks for the hugs
Food stamps will only cover food...TANF is "Temporary Aid to Needy Familes", which is a check that can be used for whatever you wish to use it for.

I plan to contact an attorney tomorrow, just too much other stuff going on today for that.

As for my husband, he's just an ass.

8. I'm not an attorney, but something about the way you were let go
just doesn't pass the smell test. I used to be a manager in a pretty large company, and had to hire and unfortunately, terminate employees. There are some pretty strict rules about what you can and can't do, and I don't remember anything like this. Admittedly, this was almost 10 yrs ago, and things may have changed, but I can't imagine anything like what you experienced today. Seems like your former employer would want to cover their ass a little better than they did. I think they left themselves exposed, because of the way they handled this.

I can't imagine your wanting to go back there, after they way they treated you, but certainly the help of an attorney could ease your transition into something else.

It sounds as if you are pretty upset (deservedly so, I might add), and am wondering if you will be able to get any sleep tonight? Just an idea, but can you run a bubble bath for yourself, and get a glass of wine and just go soak for awhile? Be kind to yourself, and do something nice for YOU! Also, it will help you relax and maybe get sleepy. You certainly need the rest, as I am guessing tomorrow will be a busy one for you....

I'm sure todays events are echoing in your head, but truly I believe, that God doesn't close a door, without a window opening soon. I am believing for you, that He has a wonderful master plan that will provide you with a new and better opportunity, really soon!!

12. These people aren't exactly brilliant
I'm fairly sure that I'll have them over a barrel. A former co-worker told me that the bossbitch was ranting the last week that I was out that maybe I wouldn't come back, which would save her the trouble of firing me. Shame on her! The reason that they gave for my termination was that the week I came back after a four week medical leave (one of which was spent in IMCU), I was only able to work about twenty hours. I knew months ago that they were plotting my demise. I was looking for another job, had several good leads, but didn't get any of them.

No, I definitely don't want to go back there. I'd rather vote for a rethuglican!

I'll be able to sleep...Immodium knocks me out, and I've been pumping myself full of it trying to stop everything I eat from running straight through me. No wine, allergic to grapes, and I'm broke.

I just want to curl up and cry. Now hubby just called to say he's on his way home, with a friend! Yip-fucking-ee!

18. oh man...
sometimes hubbies can be THE most insensitive and self-centered beings! I imagine he's bringing the friend home, as a way to avoid the immediate situation. Not that that helps you right now.

I'm glad to hear that you had some other job leads before your illness (?), even if they didn't pan out then, it sounds like you have skills that people are looking for. It also sounds like you have a really good case against these idiots at your former job.

I guess I'm kinda worried about you, just getting out of the hospital and surgery? Is this stress going to affect your healing and recovery? Do you have a plan for tomorrow that you can start working towards getting on your feet again, to help lessen the stress you are undoubtedly feeling now?

Crying... its probably going to do you good to just let it out. We here at DU are sending you lots of hugs, peace, and healing (for your body, mind and spirit!)

16. I'm sorry I messed up on the link...
to second harvesters...

I checked your kitty cat link, and saw Bear was from Pearland! I live in Houston, and perhaps these links may be more helpful:

and

http://www.google.com/local?hl=en&lr=&rls=RNWE,RNWE:2005-05,RNWE:en&q=food+bank&near=Pearland,+TX&sa=X&oi=localr

they may give you access to some of the things you are needing just now...

13. What is going on that you haven't told us about?
Mother-in-law cancelling gas cards and threatening to take away a car, employer firing you, husband leaving to go to a friend's house, all because you were so ill that you had to spend days in the hospital?

I'm sorry, but this does just not add up.
