Cat trees are the best invention. Ever!!!!
I bought my kitties a cat tree recently, and they just love it.

They are like, "Look what my Mommy bought me!!"

I wish I had room to buy a second one.

It allows them to sit up high, and stay out of my hair.

With a kitty on each level, it's easier to pet them this way too.

Just go up the ladder :D

1. Do you plant the cat heads up or heads down?
Any special fertilizer for this "cat tree"?

One thinks she lives on the bathroom counter, otherwise, my bed is the cat den.

4. How expensive was it? I always see them in those catalogs for outrageous
amounts... We like to think our bookshelves and counters and cupboards may be a good enough substitute.

8. Is it carpeted?
If so, how hard is it to clean? I need to provide my kitties with some more play area. They have stairs to run up and down. I think that they would love a tree. I'll have to check out Petsmart.

11. Pet hair attachment...?
There is such a thing? Does it actually work? 'cause the Polar Twins (Quark and Neutrino, snow-white cats both) have been taking turns racking out on my *black* office chair... :D

12. Yep -- it actually works
I got it from Oreck -- however, I'm quite sure other stores sell it.

It's an attachment made specifically to pick up cat hair.

22. Thanks, I'll have to get one!
Our plans currently involve giving the furniture the 16hp garage vacuum treatment to start with, but I need something a tad less, er, overproduced for routine defuzzing. :D

14. There is such an attachment available through equine catalogs
for vacuuming your horse. Probably available through Jeffers Dog and Cat catalog. See also, Jeffers Equine or State Line Tack. You can actually vacuum youf fuzzy friends. The attachment has rubber teeth.

24. How loud are they?
Anything above a slight whirr is likely to freak out the skittish ones, which make up 4/7ths of the current hordes.

29. If you have a quiet vacuum then the kitty might be ok
with the animal groomer attachment. Equine vacuums are quiet but expensive. The attachment works with any standard vaccum hose.
A friend of mine vacuums her dogs! One of my kitties is deaf, so vacuums don't bother her.

23. If I bought him a tree, he'd probably figure out a way to nail himself to
it so he could be a kitty martyr. He's the first male kitty drama queen :).

15. I'm curious about that too.
Although I have a fried that built a nifty little set up for his wife's kitties. It cost him next to nothing, but he has an engineering degree from CalPoly.

19. I recommend this place:
http://www.cozycatfurniture.com is where we just bought two of them. These guys make GREAT cat trees. No particle board, no cheap hardware. Excellent materials and workmanship. I highly recommend their products.

Trees can be expensive but IMO if you have it to spare, it's worth it. These ones each cost about the same as our old one, which is WAY cheap. We got robbed on that one. Bleagh.

20. If you have ANY skill with tools, you can build one VERY cheaply.
I built this double unit for my girlfriend's folks for less than $100 in materials. (old carpet was free)

They had just been out in CA, and had seen some very PLAIN cat trees priced at over $300 in some trendy shops. They needed something more elaborate for the three lads they had just adopted, so we put this together for her mom's birthday present.

If I'd had a day or two to find a nice construction-site dumpster, I could have kept the materials budget under $50, but time was short so we bought the lumber new.

26. If you have a carpenter in the family, you can make one out of scrap
My husband made this one out of oak scraps for our babies, and they LOVE it.. The platforms alternate in height, and are carpeted...The scratching post (partially visible in front) is just a square fence post..mounted to a large platform (no tip)..and then carpeted too..

It usually is not in a corner, so they can appraoch it from all sides, but we are in the midst of remodeling, and it's stashed in a corner right now..
