Monday I'm getting a new cat.
Woman brought it into the vet's. It had been hit by a car, and she wanted it put down. The vet looked for another owner. She would donate the surgery (leg had to be amputated) if someone would have it neutered and pay for the shots. That would be soft-hearted me.

OK, here's the problem: My wife wants to name it "Jasper". The girls, and I are holding out for "Stumpy Joe". We have been running a survey, some people think Stumpy Joe is cute, and even "awesome", others think it is mean or cruel. I think it's great because my mother-in-law thinks it "mean".

My wife and I have decided to let the folks on DU decide. If you're interested, tell me your choice, and why you think so. Greatest number of votes wins.

1. If you can't name it "Tripod," I vote for "Stumpy Joe."

14. Thanks,
I love cats. I now have three, and 4 dogs. Not counting all the ones that await me in heaven (assuming I make it).

16. Forgethell. Come on. Someone who decides to adopt a 3-legged
cat (one that is fresh out of amputation surgery, I might add) after someone else has cavalierly decided it should die -- you're going to heaven, big guy.

Actually, stumpy makes me a bit sad for him too.

Not that Stumpy Joe is bad, it's just a lot of name for one cat. :)

It's got personality....Any cat can be a Jasper; it takes a special feline to be Stumpy Joe.

6. I don't think the name matters that much, you're givin' the kitty
a new lease on life :)

I don't see anything wrong with Stumpy Joe (or Long John Kitty for that matter) :) I really don't think the cat will care too much.

15. That's sorta what I thought.
However, my wife thinks the cat might be insulted. And wives are never wrong, at least with their husbands. At least that's been my experience.

8. Dude, it's a cat!
I don't think his feelings are going to be hurt if you call him "Stumpy". My dog is named Ceile which is Irish for "dancer". SHe was hit by a car and has a bad hip. Does that make me "mean"?

10. What about "Joey"?
That way, you and the kids can call him "Stumpy Joe" among yourselves, but he still has a cute and dignified name to everyone else. The most important thing, though, is that you are providing a needy helpless creature a home. He sounds cool, and it would have been a terrible waste to destroy him. I have 6 myself, all indoor cats, neutered and not declawed, and they really enhance my live tremendously. The more we can save, the better.

18. I never declaw a cat.
That would be cruel, in my opinion. And I always neuter or spay. It would be cruel not to, as I don't let them out.

21. Thanks.
You know, a dog or a cat repays any effort put into its keeping. I'd have a hundred of each if I had the space, and could keep them properly.

If I ever do win the lottery, I'm going to buy a farm and open my own pet sanctuary. No euthanization, ever. But it's
s just a dream.

32. I worked in a steel plant once.
Well several times, actually. Steel plants have railroad tracks.

There was a pack of feral dogs that lived on the grounds, all litter mates from a stray bitch. One by one, the human resources director caught them all. All but one. This last dog was uncatchable.

The dog fell asleep on the railroad track one night, and the train ran over his left hind leg, severing it below the knee. That damn dog stayed out there and recovered. The HR guy still couldn't catch it and finally gave up and named it "Tripod". Then he started putting dog food out for it, figuring, I guess, to give the rabbits a break. Then the whole plant started putting food out for it.

When I left, that dog was fat, happy, and tick-ridden, and nobody had ever gotten within 15 yards of it.

I sort of felt he had earned sole right to the name of "Tripod", and retired it for my personal use.

..Jasper. Believe me the 'Tripod' & 'Stumpy' thing has been overdone for 3 legged animals. :P Jasper's cuter!

Edit: Or if you go with Stumpy Joe, call him 'SJ' or something.. just a long name for a cat, and you know you'd shorten it sooner or later. :)

31. I vote for any non-disparaging name
Why do people give their pets names that sound more like insults? To enjoy a little feeling of superiority every time they call for "Stumpy", or "Dumpy", or "Fatso", or whatever they've decided to name the poor thing?

Affection without respect is kind of creepy. Reminds me of "Dr." Dobson -- the right-wing religious fanatic -- who named his Dachshund Siggy because of his own fierce loathing for Sigmund Freud.

34. I prefer to
think of it as descriptive, rather than disparaging. However, it is a point to be taken into consideration.

I'm not sure that the term "respect" applies, though. Humans you can respect, or disrespect, but animals just are. They are not creatures with moral discretion. Just my opinion.
