waiting to get my connection to Little Rock and then a flight to Philadelphia where I would be processed into the Army, a man walked up, and asked if he could sit down. Being a polite country boy from Arkansas on his own in the world for the first time, I told him of course.

When I sat my soda down, the man picked it up, took a drink, and walked off with it. The act was so stunning and outside my realm of experience, all I could do was watch him wander around the station with my drink in hand until it was time for me to board my bus.

How do you make the homemade cinnamon syrup?

27. Oh, it's easy.

2 cups sugar, one cup water, one tsp (or so, to taste) cinnamon.

Cook and stir, bringing to a boil, continuing to stir for a couple of minutes until it starts to thicken and the sugar is completely dissolved.

It's delicious warm or cold, and it will thicken more on standing.

You can do this for maple syrup too, using a teaspoon of maple flavoring instead of the cinnamon.
