So $2,500 Mysteriously Showed Up in My Checking Account
It was electronically transferred in and I have no idea where it came from. I contacted the bank and they too have no idea who transferred it in or where it came from.

I transferred it to my money market account and I ain't spending it.

1. someone is gonna claim it
it's a good think you're not spending it because you'd have to pay it back sooner or later

but I think there's a statute of limitations on how long before the money is yours

check with the bank

2. As a person who used to work in wire transfers at a major bank...
I would bet the wire transfer person was tired, busy, something else, and transposed numbers on an account. I would keep it in your account so they can easily debit it back out if I were you. :hi:

Which is linked to the checking account. Will they let me keep the interest on it?

6. When they take it back, if you go negative, they'll probably slap
you with penalties and overdraft charges. It's how banks make their best money the past few years.

15. Removing money
I don't think they have to inform you at all. I have direct deposit of my paycheck and a few weeks ago I was overpaid by a couple hundred dollars. The payment advice I was given was the correct amount, but what was actually transferred in was over that. It was transferred out of my checking account without a word to me. I only caught it when I reconciled my account.

I'd do whatever the bank says. Usually money markets at banks only get like 1.5% anyways, you probably won't make much putting it in there.

25. If it's linked they'll be able to get to it...plus they can go back and
check your transactions. I doubt they'd let you keep the interest as it isn't your money, unfortunately. I would actually call them and give them a head's up on it if I were you. Best thing to do is not to touch it since you don't know where it came from.

week and see what happens. It usually takes 2 to 7 business days to trace a wire transaction, depending upon where it originated from. FWIW, the bank should be able to trace from their end to the incoming deposit. It's odd that they aren't since you called. :hi:

31. Do you run a home based business? I would really ask the bank to
trace the transaction. Good luck! I hope it's yours! What a pleasant surprise that would be!

32. Nope, No Home Business
I already asked them to find out where the money came from, and they said they had no more information...I guess I could kick it up a level and talk to a supervisor, but I guess a part of me is thinking that I already did my civic duty and tried and I don't want to draw TOO much attention to it, if you know what I mean.

21. They would let you know after the fact.
I once received a letter from BofA explaining that $200,000 had been "erroneously credited" to my checking account, and was debited out two days later. I never noticed the money myself (damn!), but they did let me know what had happened. I would hope that any reputable bank would do the same.

FYI, they don't have to get your permission because the money isn't yours. From their perspective, they're simply correcting a data error in their own computers, and aren't modifying "your" balances or assets in any way.

If not, when the error is corrected your checking account will be debited and possible overdrawn.

They cleaned out my retirement account. They transferred money back and forth between all my accounts. They even converted some cash to a GIC for me. They transferred money out of my accounts too. They were just trying to cover their tracks.
