I feel kind of weird...
Yesterday, on the way home from work, I saw something laying in the street. I stopped my car and walked over to pick up a wallet. Inside there was no money but there were credit cards, drivers license, bank cards and some union papers. I put the wallet in the car and drove home. Got here and called information to dial the number (because I couldn't find it in our local phonebook). Got the number, called at 6:00 am (and felt bad about it because it was so early) and talked to a woman who informed me that the owner of the wallet was in St. Lukes hospital and about to undergo surgery and would be in ICU. I offered to mail the wallet to the address on the ID and she said thank you and said to add my return address and they'd send me some money.

I said, "No thanks. That's not necessary."

We ended our conversation. A while later she called back and said, "Where did you find the wallet?" and I explained it to her. She said, "Are there any bars around there?" and when I said yes, several she just laughed and said thanks.

Well, in the afternoon while I was sleeping the phone rang again. I answered it, kind of groggily and the guy on the other end said, "Will?" and I said yeah. He asked if he has woken me and I said yes. He apologized and I said that was OK. And then he started to tell me who he was. It sounded like a sales call but I didn't hang up like I normally do.

Then he said he was the father of the guy whose wallet I found and how much he appreciated the fact that I was returning it and insisted that I give my return address on the envelope because he wanted to send me something.

I said the package was already in the mail and the address was on there and he said thanks again.

Now I feel weird because I really DON'T want them to send me anything. I didn't do it to get something in return.

OK, enough early morning whine. Time to get some food.

1. Don't Feel Weird
You went out of yur way to do the right thing. A lot of people wouldn't. The guy and his family are stressed out, and your act of kindness probably seems like a good omen or something, and you have made them feel good in a way they want to repay you for. If you feel like it, if they contact you again, tell them if they fel they must do something, make a donation to your favorite animal charity. This allows them to make the gesture they want to, and it benefits animals, which should make everyone feel good.

First, I want to say that you went above and beyond the call--you showed that honesty and integrity are still in existence in the good ole USA. (I left my wallet in a buggy at walmart, in the parking lot, and it was returned to the customer service desk--honest people still exist!) Kudos to you for helping this family.

Second, why not donate the money to a homeless shelter in your home town, or something of the likes--maybe a children's hospital or home?
Then, afterwards, send a card to the family telling them where the reward money went.

Good for you for being a good guy. Wish more people had your ethics.
