Anyone really enjoy the movie Don Juan De Marcos?
Just asking because my mother and I saw it awhle back and really enjoyed it. Looking for some other rentals that might be enjoyable to share watching with her... so thought I would ask those who liked the Depp movie - as at least on that movie our tastes are similar.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks.

1. Johnny Depp was amazing in that movie....
I remember thinking what a good actor he was watching that movie.
Previously I had considered him to be just a pretty face.

2. I admit it... I love the face (he is gorgeous)
but the movie, his role, the whole thing was whimsically delightful.

3. That movie's great!
And it's Selena singing in the beginning!!! (Sorry, but she's one of my favorite artists, and I'm still pissed that she was taken from us.)

Have you seen "The Secret of Roan Inish"? That is one of the best movies of all time--seriously awesome. It's not a romantic comedy, but it is a wonderfully mystical piece about a family healing from an old trauma with the help of the sea and those that live in it.

5. Older people that I have known have enjoyed:
1) The Japanese original of Shall We Dance

2) Mrs. Brown--the story of Queen Victoria (played by Judi Dench) and the Scottish servant (played by Billy Connolly) who brought her out of her depression after the death of Prince Albert.

3) Strangers in Good Company--a 1986 Canadian film about a busload of elderly women from a senior center who are stranded in the wilderness. As they figure out how to survive until they are rescued, they talk about their lives. The actresses are all non-professionals, and the stories are their actual lives.

6. The first one is definitely a charmer
I saw it - recommended it, she took friends and saw it and loved it.

Taking down the other two... the last one looks particularly intriguing/enjoyable. Perhaps a different twist on the Amy Tang book/movie that looks at the mothers' lives' stories through the eyes of the daughters.

7. Chocolat and the Notebook. And Veer-Zaara.
Edited on Sat May-14-05 10:53 AM by tjdee
Chocolat has Juliette Binoche in it, and Johnny Depp has a smaller (but still delicious!) role as a gypsy. I put off seeing for a while, but I found it to be delightful and a bit whimsical. Very nice.

The Notebook is very sweet. Not usually my kind of film, but for some reason Don Juan DeMarco reminds me of it?

And I'm recently watching Bollywood films again, and if you want whimsical you can't beat them. They're almost like very wholesome musicals (the actors never kiss). Just saw Veer-Zaara and it was a very touching love story. One of the better love stories I've seen, even. It was 3 hours and 12 minutes--Bollywood films tend to run long.

8. I caught the second have of Chcolat last week
didn't know what I was watching and had to put various pieces together to have it make sense. Will have to watch the whole thing.

I will look for Notebook. (I am getting a great list of future movies..yea!)

I have not heard before of Bollywood films - could you tell me more?

9. They come out of India.
Edited on Sat May-14-05 11:13 AM by tjdee
Basically (and there's more to it) it's the Indian film industry. So they're in Indian languages(with subtitles, although some of the newer ones are interesting in that the actors mix like...Hindi with snippets of English).

Most of them have elaborate musical numbers (and LOL, I swear they get the same two people to sing in all of the films!). And it's Indian music, which can be strange at first. The acting is comparable to ours--if you saw the piece on 60 minutes about Aishwarya Rai, she is one of the biggest stars in Bollywood. All the women are beautiful, all the men are strong...very escapist and fairy tale-ish.

But as I say, they run long, so you can see where they could have cut out some things. Doesn't seem to bother Indians, LOL, another one of my favorites, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (another love story), ran for six years in the theater, major hit--just over 3 hours.

One thing I like about them is that older actors have something to do. It was very cool, in Veer Zaara, for example, that the older actors got to do some dancing and singing. Don't notice that in American film/theater.

Oh, and in Veer-Zaara, what lovely photography of India! I didn't know India looked so lovely.

11. Absolutely! We bought it and watch it every Valentine's day!
It's just so romantic. Sigh!

Silly? Perhaps, but also profound.

12. One of the most romantic flicks I have seen.
Not only is Depp great, but Brando & Dunaway really clicked. That there is one great movie.

14. I'm not a big fan of romantic movies at all
But I did enjoy that one. I loved the music and the whole Latin flavor to it.
