At least in the more recent movies.

5. Well, then they should have followed the alphabet properly
Instead of having stuck on one letter.

I suggest they proceed backwards from now on then.

10. It's always 'M'
because in real life, it's always 'C'.

6. They both play 'M'
That's Judi Dench; prior to her it was Bernard Lee:

9. According to IMDB, Robert Brown was 'M' before Judi Dench
in the films from Octopussy to License to Kill. I can't even picture him, I'm afraid. Bernard Lee died quite a bit of time before that 1981. Moonraker was his last Bond film.

7. Before Bond became a member of Universal Exports
he was a Commander in the Royal Navy. So, his boss at that time would have been a senior RN officer.

11. Sir Miles Messervy
I do believe that this fellow's name is where the "M" comes from.

Played very exquisitely by Bernard Lee.

13. I thought it was because they were working for MI-5....
Thus, M. That was always my guess.

14. The real "M" was actually a "C"...
Mansfield Cumming was his name, I believe. The character of Miles Messervy was based on him. And there the "C" became an "M".
