40. True sports cars don't have ragtops, they compromise rigidity and weight
And yes, I know that's hotly debated. It's just that everyone who disagrees is wrong. Oh regarding the criteria, 140 HP doesn't even cut it in an economy hatchback these days and 3400 pounds is enough weight for "manboobs" on any sports car.

These days, a true sports car is around 3000 pounds (still too heavy really) with at least 250-300 horsepower and 2 seats. There are a few exceptions, but there always are.

Class dismissed. ;)

43. True - that's why I mentioned "these days"
Not every Ferrari is a sports car, they also made and make many GTs that are some of their most popular models. Classically - I'd agree with your description save for the weight.

Older sports cars were featherweights compared to today's cars which are so heavy due to federally mandated safety technology, some of which is a good idea and some of which is there to keep other makers out of our market.

Back in the 50's, 60's and much of the 70's 2000 pounds was considered heavy for a true sports car. There are precious few vehicles these days that low weight, the Lotus Elise is one. Not surprisingly, it does very well with just 190 horsepower. Even a new Mini can top 2700-2800 pounds with the right options.

Lol am I taking this too seriously or what? I am just a hopeless gearhead.

Here's a gorgeous Dino for you:

44. Yes, that is gorgeous
With some larger wheels and lower profile tires and stiff shocks I'll bet that would be a really zippy car. Not to say it isn't already.

And what's the diff between a sports car and a GT, I didn't know there was one

49. GT short for Gran Turismo (like the game)
GTs are larger and heavier, built with an eye toward touring as well as performance. They often have 2+2 seating and luxurious interiors, but retain the high performance engines and most of the suspension/handling improvements of sports cars.

In modern American terms a sports car is a Corvette and the GTO is a GT. Import-wise, the RX-7 was a sports car, the RX-8 is a GT.

GTO

Corvette

RX-8

RX-7
