Humane Society Update and a Business Question - REPOST
Yes, this is a repost message because I didn't get an answer from anyone so figured I would try again:

Many of you know that we had dealings with the Northwoods Humane Society in Iron River MI.

(For those who wanted to make a donation the address is: Northwoods Humane Society, 1501 West Mineral Avenue, Iron River MI 49935)

They're trying to put together enough money to buy a new building as they are currently located in the Sherrif's department (the Sherrif doubles as the Animal Control officer).

We went to Michigan on Monday and bought some stuff to take there. Believe me, they need a new building.

My question is:
Does anyone know how small businesses can make donations to organizations? We're going to donate a computer to them on Saturday so they can get a web presence (for those who asked about making a donation through Paypal we are trying to help them work on it). We also want to donate 10% of our sales from shows and stuff to them. I'm sure this is allowed but don't really know much about how it affects taxes, etc. Does anyone know where I can find out this information?

Thanks much!

Will

1. They are probably a 501(3)(c) non-profit, right?
It will be in the US code as to how money is handled. Let me do some research for you. Back in a bit.

2. Okay.....this is what I know......
I hope any tax professional on here will pipe in.

It's simple, anyone can make a donation to a humane society, which is a charity for tax purposes. just desginate on the monetary or material donation that it is a 'donation' and it is tax deductible for the donor.

As for how the humane society keeps track of it.....that's a realm that their accountant should be aware of.....

So.....basically...just give the money or goods to them, and if it is a good that you are donating, provide a letter describing the item and noting that it is a 'donation'. For your tax deduction, you will want to value the item yourself. That's between you and the IRS person auditing you as to whether it's an acceptable value. But I usually just value something by what I think I could sell it for at a flea market NOT replacement value.

I remember I gave money to the human society here......and it was 100% deductible......
