I love Star Wars. I saw The Empire Strikes Back EIGHT times in the theater when it was first released, and about three dozen times on . I own two sets of the original Trilogy: the first THX-enhanced release and the re-release of the Special Edition (On DVD).
So naturally I was more than a little excited when I heard about the new trilogy. And then I saw Episode I. It was exciting, but somewhere amidst the midichlorians, the total over-hyping of Darth Maul, and the cute kid with his "are you an angel?" lines, something snapped.
I didn't think much of it until Episode II. And again, I had really high hopes for it. It seemed much better than Episode I, had more Jedi (who doesn't like more Jedi?) and Even More Explosions. And finally, we were going to see what the Clone War was all about. Again, something was...lacking. I finally nailed it down when the lovely Padme, former Queen of Naboo and current Senator of her homeworld, expressed her love for the one man in her life by saying "I truly, deeply love you."* What? This public speaker could only express her undying love for this noble Jedi apprentice with the word "truly"? This isn't Natalie Portman's fault, nor do I blame Hayden Christensen. It's the dialog itself, which has never been Lucas' strong point.
*Now in all fairness, Padme and Anakin were about to be executed, so I guess I could cut them some slack there. But I still think Lucas needed to hire a screenwriter.
But yes, I will see Episode III. And each time I see a preview for it, I get a little more excited. When the logo blares on the massive screen with the all-too familiar chords of Williams' Star Wars theme, I'll feel that electric thrill as I realize I'm about to see Star Wars in the theater again. I'll feel a little more like I'm 9 years old again, standing in a long line to see THE movie at the one location it was playing in town. And who knows? Perhaps I'll really enjoy this one. (Kevin Smith liked it, and I believe even he had some critique for Episodes I and II)
And if you've read this far, it's not that I "hate" Star Wars. (I love it.) It's just that I'm older, and can see the flaws in the story lines more clearly. And I do expect a little more from my movie. That being said, it is just a movie...one I'm gettin' kinda psyched to see in a week. (Anyone else hear the TIE fighter sounds in the trailer???)
