Anyone see PJ O'Rourke on History Channel this morning?
He was narrating an episode regarding the Battle of Iwo Jima. He looks good and I admit it was nice to see him.
I've always liked PJ. Right, he's a Republidink -- but he comes from Toledo and went to college at (IIRC) Bowling Green. I grew up in Saginaw and attended Central Michigan, so I can relate to him there.
He is an insightful writer and a true wit (as in: he cracks my ass up). I would like to drink a couple beers with him and discuss current events some time.
Anyhow, I was glad to see PJ alive and well.
John
It is now 40 days, 22 hours and 48 minutes to FUNDAY. Carl the Republican will be doing the cooking (and, through his party store, providing all the beer at wholesale). Carl is another Republican I really like.

1. What's O'Rourke's take on Bushco?

He is possibly the only funny conservative on the planet (no Dennis, you
do not make the cut), but he is more Libertarian, isn't he?

2. I don't know much about him...
But anyone who writes a book called "Peace Kills" doesn't get much credit from me.

3. He was an early editor/writer for the National Lampoon circa 1974
These days he's my favorite conservative author. I especially enjoyed his 15 year old "Holidays in Hell" about his adventures abroad while writing for Rolling Stone.

He has expressed disdain for Buxh's foreign policy program, and the war in Iraq in particular.

4. "Holidays in Hell" is one of my favorites too

And I am sure that "Peace Kills" is used sarcastically, primate. I can think of very little I've read from PJ that would indicate he is a warmonger. A booze- and receational drug-monger perhaps, though (like most of us) I'm sure he's getting more circumspect in his impending dotage.
Anyone who can write a book like "A Parliament of Whores," which includes two of my all-time favorite chapter headings: "The Three Branches of Government: Money, Television and Bullshit" and "Our Government: What the Fuck Do They Do All Day, and Why Does It Cost So Goddamned Much Money?" is A-OK in my book.
I encourage all DUers to read at least one book by PJ. I sure don't always agree with him, but he is NEVER boring.
John
Now 40 days, 22 hours blah blah.

5. And other NatLampCo writers thought he was a phony back then....
described as "coming off like a narc" despite his long hair and work shirts.

6. PJ O'Rourke
Edited on Sun May-08-05 01:44 PM by stellanoir
penned the most astute article in Rolling Stone Mag. back during the buildup to Desert Storm.

He was so damn funny. Something like "these Arabs hate these Arabs because of (this). . .these Arabs hate these Arabs because of (this). . .these Arabs hate these Arabs because of (this). . .these Arabs hate these Arabs because of (this). . .so the only thing they can all agree upon is hating the Jews," and now by extension and most unfortunately. . . us.

Not so funny now though, I'm afraid.

7. yeah, he's hilarious
Edited on Sun May-08-05 01:57 PM by DeaconBlues
especially when he was making bullshit up about Kerry and the Democrats:

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/004/770chlec.asp

"There are two organizations pushing for change in November--al Qaeda and the Democratic party. And they both have the same message: "We're going to fix you, America." On the whole, the terrorists have a more straightforward plan for fixing things. They're going to blow themselves up. Although, come to think of it, Howard Dean did that..."

He's just another right-wing libertarian asshole - otherwise known as a republican who still wants to smoke dope and screw anyone he likes.

8. mocking the democrats, clinton, liberalism year in and out
heaping scorn on the left while the right destroys the country that nurtured o'rorke....whatever happened to 'afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted'? o'rorke is a fool, a bush patsy who prepped the room for the busheviks....and don't say he never knew...what's there to choose between the right (the priviledges of the few trump the needs of the many) or the left (where the needs of the many are allowed to impact on the priviledges of the few)...what was o'rorke's choice? the RIGHT, that was it...that's why he hides, that's why william buckley hides, or sam donaldson, tom brocawcaw, dan rather, or billy graham and kookie roberts/tucker carlson/ari fliesher/tom ridge/john asscrack/ted olsen/colin powell etc.... because they know its a criminal organization, and they fear what happens when the people become aware (the us army cannot, will not try, to control a true uprising by the american people) of what's gone down...we should shoot them all, let satan sort them out
