try these :
google.com has address 216.239.57.99
google.com has address 216.239.37.99
google.com has address 216.239.39.99
(by which i mean to say the numerical address brings my browser to the google page)

hmm, that doesn't appear to be quite right--only takes you to google
however the answer came from google's own nameservers.

gmail.com. 86400 IN NS ns2.google.com.
gmail.com. 86400 IN NS ns3.google.com.
gmail.com. 86400 IN NS ns4.google.com.

looks like gmail really is unavailable. I asked ns1.google.com about gmail.google.com and it saith gmail.google.com's canonical name is gmail.l.google.com. I ask it about that name and it says it doesn't know an ip for it.

gmail.com actually routes you to gmail.google.com. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Whois for gmail.google.com gives:

NS3.GOOGLE.COM 216.239.36.10
NS4.GOOGLE.COM 216.239.38.10
NS1.GOOGLE.COM 216.239.32.10
NS2.GOOGLE.COM 216.239.34.10

But those IPs just give page load errors.
