Finally-Do you feel elitist for not watching American Idol?
or rather, does a small inkling inside say "haha, i'm better than you" to people who do enjoy it?

this is a follow up question for my last thread.
so?

5. No
I'm just happy I don't have to sit through all the lousy, watered-down r & b. If that's elitist, then guilty as charged.

6. Oh Phurphoo.
I don't feel elitist about television of any kind. People like different things. Back in the days when I didn't watch television at all, - then, - maybe, - I was a tad elitist. I got over it.

7. No, and I don't feel elitist
It's TV, for crying out loud. Anyone who feels superior because they don't watch a certain kind of show may need to get out more. I hate the rants about people who watch certain kinds of shows. As if that defines a person.

11. Yes, I must admit to an inkling of "holier than thou" because I don't ...
...watch Americal Idol. However, I do enjoy both Survivor and The Amazing Race, and any true reality show elitist will tell you I'm a bourgeois cow for watching that crap.

12. Before hiding this thread - with all the other Amer. Idol threads-
Edited on Wed May-04-05 11:55 AM by new_beawr
I'll say - Absolutely. I only have so much time and so many brain cells left, I'm picky on how they're used. I've already put someone on ignore over this, the first time I ever did, as a result of an uncharacteristically nasty exchange.

And while I do not think that I am better than you as a whole person, I feel like my taste and intellect is better than those that enjoy this sort of show. But then, there's no accounting for taste, but given a choice between American Idol and Shakespere or even a Documentary, what do you think is more appealing to a more sophisticated thinker? Also, the other poster that cited the Bread and Circuses aspect of the show is right on the money.

27. You think your "intellect is better"?
Really? Wow.

Sometimes my intellect is bad. I punish it, and then it is better.

But sometimes I wish I did so that I could escape for an hour or two a day. But then that would lead to few hours a day. Then four. Then..

Well, you get the picture.

There's not much I can say about that that wouldn't take me hours of thinking and then hours of writing a response, so there it is.

I know I'm not better than anyone at all, fwiw.

17. At it's best, you get to see top-notch performances, and it's good TV
I was watching this inane "Top 40" show hosted by Ryan Seacrest with performances by popular artists. It struck me how they really sucked compared to what you see on American Idol. The so-called amateurs on AI were so much better than the top-billed professionals.

18. No, I don't feel like an elitist
I don't get why people like it, but then again, I don't get why people like many things, soaps, reality TV, NASCAR, in fact most of TV period. But hey, to each their own

19. I work when it's on. I save my VCR taping for 24, and Survivor.
I get Sunday evenings off, so I can watch TV on that night. I've watched it. It's pleasant enough lounge style singing, but it's not interesting enough for me to bother taping.

I don't feel that special for not watching it, as I'm sure I'm not doing anything much more interesting with the time I spend not watching it!

(I will admit to feeling a bit superior to those who watch reality TV crap (IMHO) like "Survivor" or "Big Brother", though...)

guaranteed there is someone out there who does or does not do something more or better than me, so I'd be beneath them!

Hubby and I watch different TV - read different books - like different movies and yet we are equals. Hmmmm :pals: I love my husband...oh, sorry drifted off
