Buick Names Car After Masturbation
Edited on Thu Oct-23-03 10:49 AM by matcom
<snip>

MAKUHARI, Japan (Reuters) - General Motors Corp will rename its Buick LaCrosse in Canada because the name for the car is slang for masturbation in Quebec, embarrassed officials with the U.S. automaker said Thursday.

GM officials, who declined to be named, said it had been unaware that LaCrosse was a term for self-gratification among teenagers in French-speaking Quebec.

GM officials in Canada are working on a new name for the car, a sedan that will go on sale next year to replace the Buick Regal.

1. LaCrosse? Oh yeah we used to call it "touch football"
How is "LaCrosse" slang for "shaking hands with the unemployed"?

3. A little study of local culture would go a long way
Remember the Chevy Nova? GM tried to sell it in Mexico, but since "no va" means "it won't go" in Spanish, the car didn't sell well at all there.

19. I'm always amused by the name Cadillac Escalade
an escalade is an attack by ladders on a besieged fortification - it's usually a suicidal-type attack. Therefore, buying the Escalade is a suicidal attack on the highways of the world. Most appropriate for a gas-guzzling Suburban Mall Assault Vehicle.
