But it was a birth defect - lack of cartilage behind my ears. I couldn't hear anything behind me.

And the endless taunts of "Dumbo" by older kids didn't help. They grew up to be freepers, so I am okay with it, lol.

I was one of the first half dozen kids in America to have the corrective surgery, called otoplasty, in 1974. The surgery was performed by a Navy doctor who did reconstructive surgery on Vietnam soldiers.

It got darker when I hit 9 or 10, and then even darker by the time I was 16. :-)

It does get lighter with lots of sun, which explains why any pic taken in Seattle made it seem even darker than I am now, lol.
