I just got a notice for Federal Court Jury Duty. Has anyone ever served?
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 04:33 PM by tjwash
I've done State Superior court Jury Duty 4 times now, but never Federal Court. They sent me a questionnaire that I had to fill out and mail back today. I actually don't mind doing Jury Duty personally, and am kind of looking forward to any differences in the courts. Has anyone ever done Federal Jury Duty? If so what's it like?

1. Depends on case....
some case as short as 3 weeks....some no more than 6 months.

2. We have a friend on fed. jury duty now. He's
sitting in judgement on a few Enron crooks. He was told to not expect to return to work for at least 2 months, not to read newspapers, watch the news, or talk about it. The court is paying him $40/day. That's all I've got!

3. Take food, drinks and plenty of reading material
You have to pass 8 hours a day sitting around waiting for them to call you, and maybe they never do, and then your week/2 weeks are up unless you actually become part of a jury. And you are not waiting in a lounge or anywhere comfortable either.

4. I served, but it was back in the early 70s -- the John Mitchell Trial
in Federal Court in NYC.

Big waiting room until you get called for a panel, then smaller waiting room for the panel, then walk up to the court if you're lucky.

I made it to a panel exactly once -- got as far as the hallway outside the courtoom. Never got inside. Pays better than State Court, though.

Bring a book or two and some crossword puzzles, balance your checkbook, whatever. :)

6. Federal judges keep a real tight reign on everybody
You're not going to have to sit through any bullshit or time wasting proceedings. It will probably be more streamlined than your previous experiences.

PS If it is a possession case, don't put the poor defendant in prison. ;)
