A few days ago a kind DU'er posted a link to William Shatner's 1978 rendition of "Rocket Man." I watched it and roared! I sent the link to a few friends and family, thinking they would enjoy it. Especially my dad - he is a major tongue-in-cheek Shatner fan.
http://gorillamask.net/rm.shtmlAnyway, my dad had trouble downloading the link. I asked if anyone else had trouble downloading it. Then writes my sister, who had been able to download and watch it. Armed with a little too much "intellectualismness" (my new word), she completely drains the experience of any fun. Here's my sister's overly intellectual rendition of Shatner's horrible rendition of "Rocket Man":
I didn't know how to summarize my reaction to the video. It wasn't all that funny to me, perhaps because I could see some serious thought and art in his performance initially, this mixed in with the irony of having t.v.'s most notorious "space man" spoof a song that deals with . . . outer space.
The silliness at the end gets mucked up with the initial quasi-seriousness mixed with irony at the beginning, so that by the end, you don't know if you're applauding a serious routine gone awry, or a bad attempt at a joke. I think the audience had the same reaction, though you have to take into account that William Shatner's appearance in a sci fi awards show at that point was a little fresher than it is today. I'm surprised no one laughed, and they should have at the end. All in all, weird and hard to pin down. Glad you were able to get a good laugh out of it, Writer. I sort of smiled, sort of winced. Didn't know how I felt. Thanks for forwarding the link.
I'd only heard of him doing this. Had never seen it.

P.S. In case you're wondering, yes I do have a good relationship with my sister. ;)
