A serious question for anyone who ever experienced liver problems
I'm okay now, but for the last two weeks I was on Cipro. Until last week, when I noticed that I'd turned an interesting shade of yellow :wtf:

Went back to the doc, was taken off the cipro and I'm now mostly back to normal where my coloring is concerned. Problem is, I feel like SHIT. Exhausted, nauseous, just generally feel like I could curl up in a corner and sleep for two weeks. My doc tells me this will pass, but seems reluctant to give me any sort of timetable for when I might start feeling normal again.

Anyone ever have this experience? If so, how long did it take to get back to feeling halfway human? Any advice on how I could speed up the process would also be appreciated :hi:

2. I don't know how long it'll take you to get back, but I've been there.
Not because of Cipro but because of being severely anemic. Perhaps that's what the Cipro did to you -- made you anemic. Get P-LENTY to drink and rest, rest, rest, rest, rest. If doc says to take iron, take it.

Best to you, belladonna.

11. Thankfully it's nothing quite that serious
I'm just surprised by how bad I've felt over the last few days and wish this would pass already.

5. I take milk thistle daily
to prevent my liver from getting fucked. I started doing this cause my uncle, who was a heavy drinker for decades, had some type of liver disorder and now is unable to dink.
I've been a heavy drinker since I was 16 (now 36) so I take milk thistle to prevent any future liver problems.

6. Google "jaundice" ... Hope you feel better soon
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003243.htm

Definition    Jaundice is a yellow color in the skin, the mucous membranes, or the eyes. The yellow pigment is from bilirubin, a byproduct of old red blood cells.

Considerations

If you’ve ever had a bruise, you may have noticed that the skin went through a series of color changes as it healed. When you saw yellow in the bruise, you were seeing bilirubin.

Normally, about 1% of our red blood cells retire every day, to be replaced by fresh red blood cells. The old ones are processed in the liver and disposed of. Much of the resulting bilirubin leaves the body in the stool.

If there are too many red blood cells retiring for the liver to handle, yellow pigment builds up in the body. When there is enough to be visible, jaundice results.

Jaundice can be caused by too many red blood cells retiring, by the liver being overloaded or damaged, or by the inability to move processed bilirubin from the liver through the biliary tract to the gut.

Most babies have some jaundice during the first week of life. The ordeal of birth can send many red blood cells to an early retirement (especially if a vacuum is used!), and babies’ livers are often unprepared for the load. Before Mom’s milk comes in and stooling begins in earnest, bilirubin accumulates more easily. Jaundice is even more common in premature babies.

Physiologic jaundice is the name for normal jaundice commonly seen in healthy babies.

Pathologic jaundice is the name given when jaundice presents a health risk, either because of its degree or its cause. Pathologic jaundice can occur in children or adults. It arises for many reasons, including blood incompatibilities, blood diseases, genetic syndromes, hepatitis, cirrhosis, bile duct blockage, other liver diseases, infections, or medications. The term also applies to physiologic jaundice exaggerated by dehydration, prematurity, difficult delivery, or other reason.

12. Wow!! Glad you're still around!!
And yeah, thankfully, my problem isn't nearly as serious as others. My doc just seems ultra reluctant to tell me when I can expect to feel better and every day, I just seem to feel worse.

8. Assuming that it was just a side effect and that there's no liver disease
you'll be up and running again pretty quickly. I had some slight liver damage from Luvox and was just laying around sleeping all the time (I mean more than normally). I discontinued it and was back to normal within weeks. I never got to the point of jaundice though, so you may take a bit longer. The liver regenerates itself unless you're suffering from some specific disease/disorder.

13. Yep, it was a side effect from the Cipro
And that's been discontinued. I guess it's just gonna take awhile to bounce back. Thanks for sharing your experience :hi:

9. Jaundice lasts about 2 weeks usually
I, however, had it for 2 MONTHS a few years ago following gall bladder surgery. 230x my normal bilirubin count in my bloodstream. almost killed me.
I feel for you. I wouldn't wish jaundice on anyone.

10. this is not intended as medical advice
but while I was having chemo, I took milkthistle for clensing, on the advice of a few different people, and my doc saw no harm in it. Hydration is always a good idea, stay away from liquor for a while, even when you start feeling better. your liver is tired.
Ask your doc about milk thistle, and how much fluid you should be taking in daily-min and max.

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon

16. Bella - Oh I'm so sorry
Milk Thistle was a good suggestion. But I think Dandelion is an even better idea. (I studied some to be an herbalist a few years ago)It is used to aid people with Cirrhosis of the Liver. The liver is the only organ in your body that can regenerate. Drink lots of water and get lots of sleep.

I hope your better soon. Miss ya around these parts! :hi:

20. And Health Food Store
Take it in Capsule form. Ask at the store for any info you need. I think you can get Dandelion tea as well if you would prefer that. Either would be OK.

:)
