3. I think he really understood...
... how vacuous and silly the branding and marketing process was in the US, and he lived to see the inevitable evolution of it as it played out into the mindless consumerism of today.

You could see it in a lot of the stories--Leopold Doppler and the gravy boat riot, the Little Orphan Annie decoder ring message, etc. People were always being disappointed by the things advertising said they should want most.

A pretty sharp observer of American culture was Jean Shepherd.
