Mystery Clouds Hippo Deaths: 300 carcasses buried without teeth

MANY of the carcasses of the hippos that were killed by anthrax in Queen Elizabeth National Park were buried without teeth.

This has prompted civil society sources to say some of them were poisoned, even though the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) insists that anthrax killed them.

Other sources say a Japanese trader based in Dubai, who wants five tonnes of hippo teeth, could have fuelled the killing of the hippos.

Hippos are listed as endangered animals under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild flora and fauna.
