How many hours of sleep do you get a day?
I ask because as of late I've been suffering from severe insomnia, and I usually only get in between five to six hours, and that's when I don't have any morning classes. Sometimes it's only two. I can feel myself getting dumber and dumber as I sleep less and less... and.. it's... harder to think.

So what's the average here on DU? 'Fess up, how many actually get in 8 hours?

2. Insomnia rules me
But I've gotten used to it; I worked in the hospitality industry for years and my sleep patterns were screwed up anyway.

I get around 5 hours a night, though I usually have one 10 hour sleep every 10 days or so...

3. Not nearly enough.
I need 9 or 10 hours to function at my best. I get about 7 hours a night. Many older people that I know say you need less sleep as you get older. I think they are just crazy to think that "one size fits all" according to age. I think it's a person by person type need. Some people just need more sleep than others. This part is kind of off topic, but I have noticed that when I am studying or reading a lot, I need to eat again. Even if I ate a nice sized meal 2 hours earlier, once I read or study a lot, I need to eat again or I lose steam. I have noticed that when I don't get enough sleep on night, my body takes me down the next night whether I want to or not. I fall asleep where I sit sometimes. I have been sleeping less lately too. Right now, I am nodding off and yet when I try to lay down and sleep, I get wide awake all of a sudden. It's weird.

4. Practically none.
I have a day job and have to get my sleep on my own time at night.

5. Averages to 8 I'd guess
Maybe more...

During the week its somewhere in the 7 hour range (depending on how much I sleep after my alarm has gone off). The week-ends screw everything up though, I tend to sleep until very late on Saturdays and lateish on Sundays - then can't get to sleep on Sunday night...

8. 8-9
Sometimes even 10 hours and that often means that I've slept too much, because you don't feel 100% fresh after sleeping too much either.

9. I can't remember the last time I've had 8 hours of sleep in a night
I can usually manage 5 hours of sleep then I'm awake for hours (if I'm lucky I can catch another hour or two of shut-eye around dawn) or I'm up for a very long day

14. Exactly what I would have written
It's mostly my fault. On the nights when I'm not at my part-time job, I just can't bring myself to get bed any sooner than midnight. Insomnia defintely is not a problem.

23. me too
I started getting up earlier to get to the gym, but I haven't gone to bed earlier... so I'm missing that 8th hour.

And I really am missing it.

19. 7-8 normally
But even I have short nights sometimes. If I happen to only sleep 5 one night my natural tendency will be to sleep 9 or 10 the next. Having people do lifesyle changes, ie: getting daily exercise, nutrition, not shortchanging hours allotted to sleep, or even sleep with a CPAP machine.......is really hard.

21. 7-8 normally. My brain doesn't work if I don't get a min. of 7 hours
I hate the whole proccess of sleep and wish humans would evolve out of needing it. I hate going to bed because I'm a night person and waking up in the mornings, even when I've had a full 8 hours, is still a painful process.
