What the .......?
If you are a single person and earn over $1009 annually you are ineligible for foodstamp assistance in JOklahoma.

See the link:
http://www.okdhs.org/fssd/ProgramInformation.htm#Food%20Stamps

The person I'm trying to help is single with no children. She grossed just over $3000 last year working part-time and temp jobs. She is in her late 50's and has spent her whole life doing bookeeping and accounting work but she has no formal training. She was laid-off about two years ago. I'm trying to help her get help because I've learned that some days she simply does not eat anythingat all. She is also about to lose her small home which needs some repairs and which she has been trying to sell. She is also - not surprisingly - beginning to have some health problems. Very sad situation. Did I mention that she has a very Republican brother who lives here locally, teaches at a Bible college and takes in an annual income in excess of $100,000?

2. I believe after reading everything that is monthly income
not annual. Pick up the phone and double check. Also, call the United Way and ask for a Community Counsel agency in your area.

3. I agree with sui generis
It is more likely a month and not a year. I hope it all works out. I know someone like that and she is getting older. It isn't that easy to find a job in their situation as the repugs would like everyone to think.
Good luck to her and it's great that you are helping.
As for the brother, that's a typical republican asshole. Nothing else to say there.

4. Turns out she is Native American
and qualifies for various kinds of assistance through her tribe - including job preferences at some of the bingo, casino and tobacco places here. She also qualifies for medical care at the Indian hospital in Northeast JOklahoma.

I'm still at a bit of a loss. She is nearly sixty years old and has never used any of the benefits available to her as a Native American. She really doesn't want to do this. Of course, she has always been very independent and does not want to accept any kind of assistance. She hasn't said so but I'm sure she is finding this whole experience to be demeaning and embarrassing.

I made an appointment and will take her to tribal headquarters to speak with one of their counselors.
