Guarding my last little piece of Cool, in a box
I have just one tiny little piece of Cool left. When it's all gone, I'll be just another asshole. Or so I'm told. They tell me it will disappear (the Cool, that is-not my asshole) suddenly on my 40th birthday, coming up in four months. And I believe them. So I'm guarding that little piece of Cool, that eroded remnant of what was once a boulder.

And this one remaining piece of Cool is really not all that cool. In fact, it's kind of embarassing: it's the theme song from Welcome Back, Kotter. I can still sing it. That's it. That's all the Cool that is left to me. So I really don't have much, do I? Can someone cool rub my forehead for good luck?

As I enter the second half of my life, it occurs to me that:

Even if you understand the opposite sex (or the same sex, for that matter), you can't put the knowledge to practical use, and god help you if you try.

Your deductible will always be at least $200 more than your out-of-pocket costs.

In both corporate and academic environments, mediocrity, like cream, rises to the top.

I believe there's a ghost of a chance we can find someone to love and make it last.

2. You know...
Since you're going to lose it anyway, put it up on EBay. Vintage cool brings in a good price, and maybe you can use the money to buy more contemporary cool. You know, the ability to rap, a high score in Grand Theft Auto...

6. Man, if you've got to keep it in a box it's already gone.
But you can still be cool over 40, it's just a different kind of cool.
