If a car does not turn over, what causes can you think of?
Starter (got replaced)
Battery (got replaced four years ago, but may need to be replaced again because car has not been driven for a long time)
Connections (replaced)

Anything else?

14. If you have a voltmeter
see if the battery is completely dead. If you not getting ANY electronics, that's the most likely cause if you're sure the connections and wiring is OK.

15. Well, if you haven't driven it for a long time
The battery can be dead. And sometimes the battery terminals will build up corrosion.

5. Could be a problem with the solonoid...
is it making a "click-click-click" noise when you try to start it? If not then the solonoid may be the problem...

9. No.
But I got the starter replaced last year and I haven't driven the car for a long time. I don't think it's the solonoid.

10. Dirty spark plugs.
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 03:33 PM by SmokingJacket
That's always my problem.

However, sometimes batteries run out quickly because there's some kind of electrical problem.

On edit: guess it's not your plugs if there's no electricity at all!

Alternator??

11. alternator fashizzled
but your battery is probably drained, especially if the car had a LED/LCD clock or car alarm or anything else that drains a trickle from the battery.

Also, if it chugs and coughs but won't catch - you may have vapor in the gas line. Try getting a neighbor to jump you first and drive around for at least ten minutes, preferably 15 or 20 without shutting off the engine to allow the battery to recharge.

12. Bad ground.
Can you turn the engine over by hand? Scary thought, but ou said ht hasn't been driven for a long time. Could moisture and condensation have caused the engine to seize? (Been there!)

First, I would make sure you have a good ground. Then I would pull a battery from another running car and try it. If you are sure the + and - terminal connections are clean and making good contact, it almost has to be the battery or the ground.

27. Sounds like battery to me
That's usually the weakest link. If you haven't run it in a while, and it's about four years old, that would be the first suspect. Can someone jump it for you?

28. I would think first dead battery
especially if no overhead lights or buzzing or anything happens when you open the doors.

if it's been sitting a long time, the battery has probably gone dead.

Just recharge it. You shouldn't need to replace it.

30. Add another vote for battery.
Most cars today have lots of small electronics that never turn off and are always slowly draining the batteries. Typically if you're going to park a car for more than a month or two, you'll want to disconnect the battery to avoid this sort of thing.

A quick jumpstart should solve your problem.
