when they act like cultural snobs and look down upon and sneer at anything that isn't classified as high culture or quality "whatever".

I love great literature, classical music, 4 and 5 star restaurants and art films (as a sampling). But, I also also enjoy crashing on the couch with some pop-literature and watching junk like American Idol or CSI or "Ernest Goes Somewhere Cheap while stuffing my face with Gummi Bears.

That doesn't make me a cultural neanderthal or hick and anyone who implies that it does "is" an elitist.

As far as entertainment goes, I don't care what people enjoy. I may not get it and I may not like it, but that's not my business.

People are different, so duh, of course they all have different tastes in things. I like something you don't like, I'm sure you like something I don't like, but why on earth would I say you're stupid or crazy for liking that thing? It's not polite. It's rude, condescending and other things.

Seriously, though... IMO what dumbs us down is not what we enjoy as entertainment... it's what we do with our brains when we're not sitting idly, being entertained.

I guess what I really don't understand is why anyone would associate what you find entertaining with being smart, and what others enjoy as being dumb? I know some extremely intelligent Nascar fans and some dipshit republicans who love physics and classical music.

I guess, to me, it's kinda like assuming all women would be great leaders 'cause they're not usually as violent as men... or that all men would be horrible stay-at-home parents because they're not usually as nurturing as women.

I can't imagine bringing myself to get worked up over what other people like to do to express themselves or entertain themselves when it doesn't involve harming anyone else.

Things that upset me include the "dumbing down" of great classic literature so the masses can "understand" them (or worse, "modernizing" them), and the colorization of beautifully filmed black and white movies, but that has to do with the degradation of works of art and not anyone's personal preferences.
