My Nashville Cat is a formidable old biddy-- Queen of the universe; Mistess of all she surveys. She puts up with nothing from noone, and makes no bones about what and where her territory is.
There's also a dog in the house-- Lady is a 1.5 year old AKC registered purebred Labrador Retriever. As sweet and gentle as she can be, always willing to play fetch or tug toys, her trainer has stated that Lady is in fact the most intelligent dog she's trained in her 20 year career. She's as close to being a puppy supergenius as is possible.
Cat has her completely cowed. Lady knows my room is Cat Country, and when she's on guard it's like there's a force field at the door. Lady will not cross the threshold if she sees Cat anywhere around. How they came to that agreement I'll never fathom, but it's there and it's real to them both.
However, Lady loves to sneak in and steal cat food when she can, which I try to stop when possible. But Lady can be a quiet, sneaky puppy, and I can't close the door all the time because I have a heated waterbed that will raise the room's temperature about a billion degrees in an hour flat. So a little while ago, she, having checked to make sure the coast was clear, padded in and wolfed down a few precious morsels of kitty food before I knew she was there.
The problem is, about that time the Nashville Cat came quietly in behind her, and let her majestic presence be known with a single miaow. Lady froze, then shot under my legs and made herself into as small a ball as a 70 pound puppy can make, under my desk. I looked down into the shadows and all I could see was a nose and brown puppy eyes as she rested her head on my leg, begging me for a way out.
If I'd ever wished I had a camera handy in my entire life, that was THE moment I'd want to snap. I was laughing so hard I (almost) forgot Cat was sitting right behind me, daring Lady to emerge. After a suitable moment of puppy/kitty lesson I intervened, and Lady shot out of the room to her freedom.
There are some moments just completely worth it all. This one will not be forgotten for the rest of my life.
