Is female boxing the dumbest idea ever conceived?
The first female boxer to die:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/more/04/04/boxer.death.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

The whole concept is repulsive to me. Women don't have to prove anything physically, THEY GIVE BIRTH! We also evolved superior brains so we wouldn't have to beat people up. Geeeeeez! I expected us to be above this kind of stuff. This is what the suffragettes worked so hard for?

End of rant.

3. If they enjoy it, what's the problem?
I certainly don't want to get the shit beat out of me, I'm much too girly for that. But at the same time, if a woman likes to box, why not let her? And the suffragettes worked hard for our freedoms, this is just another freedom to add to that list. We have the option of doing it even if most of us don't want to.

9. Ugh. It's just a stupid fad. Remember when women
were all smoking cigars during that fad? Sure they can if they want to, but they looked ridiculous.

15. Most women I know don't care what others think.
Okay, not most, but a big part of them including myself. If I want to smoke a cigar, I'll go smoke one. Who cares what I look like? If I want to leave the house looking like crap, who cares? As a woman, I'm allowed to do that and allowed to not care. Maybe boxing makes these women feel empowered. I'm sure there's something you do in your own life that makes you feel that same feeling.

10. It's always sad when a competitor dies in the ring;
male or female. And it is equally sad when a young person feels "forced" to box in order to make a living. Boxing is one of the purest sport competitions. It is one person against one person, the skills, strength, endurance, speed, and power needed to box well is unsurpassed by any other sport. I love the sport of boxing, I don't, too much, love the "business" of boxing...

it's beautiful when it's done well. But the business of boxing has made it too slimy.

18. Well, more for the boxing part
than the female part. I'm not too keen on it for men, either.

I'm down with the amazing-birthing-bodies sentiment, but not so sure about the superior brains.

19. For the record
this is not the first death in the USA that has occured in amateur boxing involving women. I'm surprised that SI made that error. A woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a "tough man" contest a few years ago. There was a civil case that stopped these poorly-run amateur fight cards.

I love boxers, but tend to dislike most promoters and many trainers. I'm writing the first of a series of articles on boxing for a local newspaper; just getting some material out this morning. It can be a good sport, and it can be ugly.

20. Competitive drive? Testing ones limits? Looking badass?
lots of reasons for women to box, most of the same as men. there are lots of highly competitive women who test themselves physically. boxing is tough, and sometimes ugly, but in terms of physical acheivement its no different than women who train for endurance racing, or marathons, or any other competitive sport where physical ability is tested. sure its not for you, but its really not that strange.

the worst part of womens boxing today is the boxing business. the best competitors are not the ones getting the attention, its the most marketable. they have the bad habit of matching the best of the women fighters against whatever local boxer will fight that night, creating great mismatches where serious women boxers are put in the ring against willing victims, seeking a paycheck and some limelight.

21. Women shouldn't be allowed to do the same things as men.
It's wrong for them to box. We should not allow them to, whether we are imposing our beliefs on them or not. They should just stay at home and give birth like they're supposed to.

/sarcasm

23. It's not about "allowing" it's about "why would they want to?"
Just the physical differences would be a clue that it probably isn't a good idea.

Tonya Harding might have crawled under her rock and never made it back for public viewing. So glad she's found a new career; at least this time she's doing the assaulting legally.

26. You'd have to ask them.
Women are seriously injured and sometimes die from skydiving. To me, it's really, really, really dumb to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft, regardless of gender.

My guess is women don't participate in physical sports to prove something to men; they do it to prove something to themselves.

29. Feel sorry for her
but there's always a risk of death in boxing due to head trauma. Goes with the sport, and most boxers are aware of the dangers.
