I just wanted to take a moment to express my sincere condolences for the loss of Pope John Paul II. He will be remembered, I'm sure, as one of the greatest spiritual leaders of recent times. I'm thinking now about his always evident love for humanity, his strong support for human rights, and the denunciation of the invasion of Iraq.

Even his stances on contraception, a woman's right to choose, and gay rights were his prayerful response to his love for people, and not the result of some ego trip, greed, or power lust. The fact that John Paul could forgive the man who would have assassinated him speaks volumes about the decent kind of human being he was.

I will never forgive him for refusing to criticize Pius XII non-response to the Holocaust, but I respect his piety in a lot of ways. There is no doubt he was one of the better Popes in modern history.
