Tonight's jazz badass on the CD: Branford Marsalis
"The Dark Keys". Kicks ZombyButt. Seen him live twice and he floors me.

Made Jeff "Tain" Watts laugh with a comment of mine, since I was practically on the stage. But NOTHING breaks that man's concentration for long. They are all great people and fantastic musicians.

2. Yes
Which reminds me... both times I saw the band it was the Trio (and this was in the early and mid-90's). Unfortunately, I never got to see Kenny.

RIP Kenny Kirkland. :-(

4. I saw Kenny with Branford right after Crazy People Music
...a CD that I loved.

He was such a talent. That was by far my favorite quartet Branford ever put together.

10. Ballad of Chet Kincaid is my favorite track from that.
Last year Concord released a version by Quincy Jones that's really great. You can find it here:

13. I think Quincy wrote it with Cosby...?
I recall Cosby had a one-season TV show (1970 or so) called "Cosby", in which he played a high school gym teacher named Chet Kincaid, and the Quincy/Cosby version has some scat singing (or a kind of early rap, done by Cosby), for the theme song. Many moons ago, it was, lol. When I heard the Branford version, I instantly was taken back to the reruns of the show that were resurrected on cable during the peak of Cosby's late 80's sitcom.

3. Amazing show I saw a number of years back
Winston (Winton) Marsalis doing the music - and the Alvin Ailley dance troop performing. Amazing.

5. Wynton
Never have seen him... but I'll point out that just about everyone who has played for Branford has played for Wynton sometime too.

The dance troupe sounds wonderful!

(but not too avante guard) troops back in the nineties (might still be - but I am not in an area that gets real exposure any more...)

8. oh cool! never heard that one
I have the album he did with their Dad, Ellis, "Joe Cool's Blues". I admit I am very fond of Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown compositions. :-)

11. Nothing to be bashful about there!
Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's not good! ;)

12. Great find
I think you are right.

I actually read about Alvin Ailley and his troop when I was in Ann Arbor - but I didn't get to seem him. A few months later when I relocated (to another college town) - and I had the opportunity to see the show - I jumped on it.
