Woman (Talking On Cellphone) Survives After SUV Flies Off Bridge

Portland, Ore. -- A woman talking on her cell phone lost control of her car and crashed into the guardrail of a downtown Portland bridge, then plummeted into the Willamette River below.

Thirty-one-year-old Melissa Borgaard somehow managed to get free from her car, which sank to the bottom of the river, and was rescued by a scuba diver.

The diver, Rich Tyler, said the woman seemed disoriented as he
was swimming toward her.

“She was lying face-up in the water, she'd look up at me as I
was swimming out there," Tyler recalled. "Once I got there, she
didn't quite know what had happened."

I have a friend that rolled his truck while checking his voice-mail. He had an epilepsy seizure while checking his voice-mail and caught the whole thing on tape. Kinda creepy.

I got hit by a dumbbunnie on a cell phone. It seems she can't talk,
run red lights or miss my front end although she had 50 feet to get around...oughta be a law! HANG UP AND DRIVE! :grr:

Which probably prompted her to exit the vehicle not long after hitting the water.

It is a frightening bridge- especially in the rain. Most Pdx-ers know not to change lanes over the small span of steel grating on the bridge. She apparently did not.
