2. they're the best band ever
seriously they are. In my opinion.

Nobody who say's they "had one good song" has listened to their albums.

Get a P2P service, and download everything from "Definetly Maybe", "What's the Story Morning Glory" and "Standing on the Shoulder's of Giants"

3. I'm from the era of The Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Cream, Queen
The Animals, CSNY, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Mountain, Dylan...
"they're the best band ever"?
I'll have to download some of their stuff, I guess.

5. I enjoy them, quite a lot actually.
Listen to "Champagne Supernova" and "Wonderwall", I like "Roll With It" and "The Hindu Times" too.

Try them, if you don't like them, no harm no foul, if not then you're found a new band. :hi:

7. They're ok
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 08:32 PM by deutsey
I like some of their songs and found them refreshing in the mid-'90s (but then I'm a big Beatles fan, so I liked their Beatlesque sound and the new direction they took it). They're no where near great, though, in my humble opinion.

They would benefit from a good dose of humor about themselves and life in general.

8. They think they are great ....
Some serious ego issues with that band ....

I stand by my assertion ... a one song band .... Champagne Supernova .. the rest simply repeats the same Beatles formula, with diminishing results ...

I hate to rag on a band though: Champagne Supernova isnt just great : It is brilliant ....

There : Fair and Balanced ....

9. Have you heard "Slide Away"
Genius. That and "Live Forever."

Definitely Maybe (1994), What's the Story Morning Glory? (1995), and their b-sides compilation The Masterplan (1998) are chock-full of instant classics. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's extremely good, melodic, classicist anthemic rock.

10. Exactly...their ego crap
just grew tiresome. I agree that "Champagne Supernova" is a good song and I like a couple others. But then the focus shifted from the music to the Gallaghers and their personal supernovas, which I found far less interesting.

11. Definitely Worth a listen - here's the lowdown
I'm a huge fan, but I'd hardly recommend them to everyone.

If you're really into '60s and '70s rock you'll probably like Oasis, though probably not LOVE them.

If you like U2 you'll probably like them as well.

Their mid-90s stuff is excellent. Anthemic rock and roll. None of it groundbreaking, but extremely tuneful. Big Beatles influence (that is talked to death) but also huge doses of David Bowie, The Stones, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Stone Roses, and especially T. Rex. Their rockers owe far more to glam than to the Beatles.

Check out these albums:

1) Definitely Maybe (1994) - their debut, not very Beatles-esque, actually more punk. One of my favorite albums and generally overlooked in the US. Top tracks include "Supersonic," "Live Forever," and "Slide Away" - one of the best rock songs of the '90s, with a giant glam-rock chord and epic chorus. Most critics and fans agree it's their best, slightly edging out...

2) (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) - Their "Beatles" album filled with rockers that owe a lot to glam and orch-pop ballads like Wonderwall that echo the Beatles. This was their US breakthrough, and you probably have heard "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" on the radio - they were ubiquitous on alternative radio back in '96.

3) The Masterplan (1998) - totally overlooked. Their b-sides compilation. Like many Brit bands, they put many of their best tracks on their b-sides. I like this better than Morning Glory.

Their subsequent work has largely been lacking. A handful of great tracks but mostly either extremely derivative or boring. Their '97 album Be Here Now is largely a self-parody despite a few good tunes. Their '00 album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is well-produced and hit-and-miss. A few excellent tracks and a few horrible ones. Their '02 album Heathen Chemistry is quite bland, with a few good tracks scattered around.

If any of this sounds interesting check them out. If it's not your thing, not a big deal. They're one of my favorites but they're not for everyone.

Some Reviews
http://www.geocities.com/sfloman/oasis.html

Also, if you like '60s and '70s rock n' roll definitely check out Blur - Oasis' archrivals in the '90s (although the two sound NOTHING alike). Blur is very Kinks-influenced and actually far more inventive and ecletic, even if their albums are someewhat more inconsistent then Oasis' best albums. Unlike Oasis, Blur has managed to stay good over the past decade, and still churns out excellent albums.

In fact, if you're into '60s and '70s rock, check out '90s Brit-rock in general. The prevailing mood was classicism and there was an explosion of guitar-driven British rock bands. Besides Blur and Oasis, worth checking out are Pulp, Suede, The Verve, Supergrass, Manic Street Preachers, and Super Furry Animals. Britpop is probalby my favorite genre of music.
