I'm a huge fan, but I'd hardly recommend them to everyone.
If you're really into '60s and '70s rock you'll probably like Oasis, though probably not LOVE them.
If you like U2 you'll probably like them as well.
Their mid-90s stuff is excellent. Anthemic rock and roll. None of it groundbreaking, but extremely tuneful. Big Beatles influence (that is talked to death) but also huge doses of David Bowie, The Stones, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Stone Roses, and especially T. Rex. Their rockers owe far more to glam than to the Beatles.
Check out these albums:
1) Definitely Maybe (1994) - their debut, not very Beatles-esque, actually more punk. One of my favorite albums and generally overlooked in the US. Top tracks include "Supersonic," "Live Forever," and "Slide Away" - one of the best rock songs of the '90s, with a giant glam-rock chord and epic chorus. Most critics and fans agree it's their best, slightly edging out...
2) (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) - Their "Beatles" album filled with rockers that owe a lot to glam and orch-pop ballads like Wonderwall that echo the Beatles. This was their US breakthrough, and you probably have heard "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" on the radio - they were ubiquitous on alternative radio back in '96.
3) The Masterplan (1998) - totally overlooked. Their b-sides compilation. Like many Brit bands, they put many of their best tracks on their b-sides. I like this better than Morning Glory.
Their subsequent work has largely been lacking. A handful of great tracks but mostly either extremely derivative or boring. Their '97 album Be Here Now is largely a self-parody despite a few good tunes. Their '00 album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants
is well-produced and hit-and-miss. A few excellent tracks and a few horrible ones. Their '02 album Heathen Chemistry is quite bland, with a few good tracks scattered around.
If any of this sounds interesting check them out. If it's not your thing, not a big deal. They're one of my favorites but they're not for everyone.

Also, if you like '60s and '70s rock n' roll definitely check out Blur - Oasis' archrivals in the '90s (although the two sound NOTHING alike). Blur is very Kinks-influenced and actually far more inventive and ecletic, even if their albums are someewhat more inconsistent then Oasis' best albums. Unlike Oasis, Blur has managed to stay good over the past decade, and still churns out excellent albums.
In fact, if you're into '60s and '70s rock, check out '90s Brit-rock in general. The prevailing mood was classicism and there was an explosion of guitar-driven British rock bands. Besides Blur and Oasis, worth checking out are Pulp, Suede, The Verve, Supergrass, Manic Street Preachers, and Super Furry Animals. Britpop is probalby my favorite genre of music.
