10. Yeah, my dad used to have two of those
he named them "Dougal" and "Tweed"; they were adorable! They only made it to nine or ten years old-some nasty genetic illness got them. :-(

13. yes, animals with unusual features do seem to be suceptible to
genetic diseases. i had a couple of manx cats who eventually succumbed to "manx syndrome". Their tailbone never fuses properly and they lose sensation in the rectal area. that is, if they make it out of kittenhood (some are born with spina bifida). if they do survive kittenhood, there is megacolon. it's chronic and usually fatal. both of mine (mother/daughter) died before their 5th birthday. it was heartbreaking:-(

14. I had a manx kitten like you described
that didn't make it past 10 weeks. It was heart breaking.

On the other hand, I also had a manx kitty that lived until she was 13. They are beautiful cats.

15. Recessive genes that give them those
unusual traits so often betray them. I'm sure that breeds like the "munchkin" don't do well either. I have two purebred cats, but both of them are "natural" breeds and therefore are fairly disease resistant.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a furkid is so hard, let alone losing two at such a young age. :-(

18. We had a polydactyl siamese manx, acted like a great dane dog
Knew he wouldn't be around long, what with all the oddities, so we enjoyed him much. He was quite the guy. Siamese markings (mother was a long thin polydactyl black cat, obvious siamese in her background), father a short tailed cat, he acted like a great dane, very composed and quiet. Would lean against you. He liked dogs too which was his undo-ing when we moved to coyote country. He was very special and died suddenly, rather than lingering on (was in the vet hospital a couple times with massive mouth sores from the FIV he contracted from being born in an infected neighborhood). He was very special.

8. It's a mutant, actually.
But a very cute mutant. 25 years ago or so, somebody found a kitten on a Scottish farm that had folded ears. So they bred the cat with others in that family until they could predictably get the folded ears and get the breed recognized.

He's just the most wonderful thing you'll ever see in life. With four catcher's mitts.

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, just a lovely face, lovely everything else too.

17. Pretty cute . . .
Take a look at this cat. (It's my sister-in-law's cat, who shows up on my patio every morning to whine for a "snack.")
