But very hard to watch. I have a question arising from watching that movie.

It seems like everytime there is a movie involving prison, people inside get raped. I was wondering if anybody knows approximately how often prison rape happens.

Does it happen to 1 in 2 inmates? maybe 1 in 10? or is it extremely rare?

I really have no idea.

About the rape thing: A lover of mine was in jail for two stints and he said same-sex happens but in more times than not, it's not rape.
I would assume that in a few instances, it is rape but by what my friend says in most cases, there's the aggressor and the submissive, and that's just the roles that some of the inmates take on.
I don't have any stats to give you, I'm just telling you what my friend said.

3. my neighbor is a prison placement officer for the california DOC

he's at San Quentin a lot and he said the show OZ is a fairly accurate depiction of prison life.

4. From all I've read and heard from people that were there it happens a lot.

If you slip a little or seem weak in any way you get moved on. If you don't or can't defend yourself you get raped and traded around. Some people submit and become a punk rather than fight or kill, it's the only way they can survive. Even if you fight hard and still get raped, other inmates hold you in contempt and no one will protect you. Prison is a very brutal place. Power is everything.

Ed Norton is a great actor. I have no idea of the %of rapes in prison, but I would guess it would be rather high :(
