I grunt therefor I am: farm animals "have emotions"
" Farmyard animals do have emotions and build friendships and bear grudges amid the muck, new studies have revealed.

Some farmers say this only confirms what they have known for years. Anita McNaught reports from New Zealand. "

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/default.stm#

link is at bottom right -- BBC NEWS: VIDEO AND AUDIO

Behavioral Scientists (Ethologists) have been researching this for years -- and many of the leading journals refused to publish the research -- and academic publisher refused to publish books on the subject. However, animal owners who live with their pets and care for farm animals are well aware of similar emotions in non-human animals. We are NOT projecting our emotions onto the animals -- rather we are all part of the animal world and it shouldn't come as a surprise that animals do have emotions.

Not reported here -- but there is abundant unpublished research about "personality" traits in animals. And a few journals have published research about "temperament traits" in non human animals. And no -- the academic press WILL NOT publish this research. Anthropomorphic is the excuse they use.

The video is interesting and it does work even on a dial-up. If you are an animal lover -- you will enjoy this BBC video clip.

Now -- we animal lovers -- shall we have a big round of "I told you so!"

1. One of the main reasons I don't eat them.
Besides, people don't like to think that much about their food. That, and the beef and dairy conglomerates would crush anyone that considered publishing anything along those lines.

Thanks for posting this, and yeah, I told you so.

2. Of course they have emotions, and personalities too.
But no real capacity for planning ahead...

8. Because that is instinct.
It has been shown that they find the bones again by their amazing sense of smell, not because they remember where it was put, usually. If you move the bone, they still find it.

5. Anyone who has spent time with animals would have to know that they
have feelings and emotions and definitely forms attachments to certain people and to other animals..and mourn when their friends die.

11. My dogs mourned the death of the apha female for a month or so.
It is true. Mammal animals really are exactly like us in 99.9% of their existence, I think. I sometimes wonder if it is just because they are BETTER adapted to their needs than us that the .1% difference arose. Because we are not well adapted and not really well done structurally, we were forced to develop tools and clothing and ever-evolving shelters, and so on. I dunno; I just wonder.

7. I know it very well
that is why any animal on my farm or comes into my family will stay in my family. You never know if you sell them what might happen, so I have stopped all breeding of my horses. If they are food animals they will be strictly pets in my circle. I can't and never could understand the raising and selling for slaughter of animals. It simply is not something I can do. For meat eaters it is a very good thing that some people can, I am just lucky that I do not have to do it.

10. I raise cattle and goats...they have emotions, which is why we need...
to treat them humanely and with regard to their emotions. And I love a steak, and goat leg BBQ is awesome. I know my place in the food chain. I don't care if it is animal or plant, we need to kill to live. And there are double-blind experiments showing that plants have some form of "feelings" as well. So there ya go.
