What'd you think of "Deliverance?"
I saw it for the second or third time a few nights ago. I thought it was great.

It's weird, for sure. But it's raw.

And I'm not looking the same way at pigs, either.

27. Poor Ned Beatty. Forever remembered as the guy that "squealed
like a pig" while getting cornholed by an inbred hillbilly.
Thats the first thing I think of when I see him.

13. Banjo boy:
"As it turned out, though, there wasn’t much demand in Hollywood for banjo boys. Several months ago, when the director Tim Burton was on location in Montgomery, Alabama, shooting “Big Fish,” he kept asking where the boy from “Deliverance” was now, because he had a banjo-picking role in mind for him. No one knew. “The state film commissioners down there tried to placate me, or laugh it off,” Burton says. “But I was serious; the banjo boy was such an iconic figure to me. Whatever that visceral thing is in film, when you can’t explain why a scene grabs you—well, that scene had it.” Eventually, two “Big Fish” crew members drove through northeast Georgia one Sunday, asking, “Anyone know where the banjo boy lives?”..."

5. Good music
but I don't like seeing men raped so not too sure I like the movie

Great rapids but unrealistic that they'd go down in a boat like the one in the movie

6. It made me extremely afraid of hillbillies...
They aren't just lovable millionaires who make possum stew out by the cement pond any more.

But it was a great movie anyway

down the river is one of the most chilling scenes on film anywhere.

civilized man and our roots in nature...I don't think they were intentionally trying to insult anyone.

14. good movie, but "Straw Dogs" is better
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 02:48 PM by sundog
Sam Peckinpah's amazing flick. It's in the same vein, but much more raw & gritty. It takes place in the English countryside... came out a year before "Deliverance," which makes me wonder if John Boorman `borrowed` anything.

Both are good movies, but "Straw Dogs" is a stonger film imo.

19. I found Straw Dogs to be forced and boring....
But then it's Peckinpah.

I really found Deliverance to be a stronger, more visceral and unnerving movie. The rape scene, and the whole underlying story about the local culture being wiped out(?)....

30. but "Straw Dogs" actually took more risks at the time
it was banned when it came out... it pushed the parameters of violence in the early 70's & certainly pissed a lot of people off.

SD definitely has a more sparse style, which I personally like.

I think Deliverance had a more broad approach in its style, which could account for its popularity. Yeah, you've gotta admire a film that can deliver a message & play on a marketable level. That, of course, is no small feat for a director. But Boorman also shat out "Exorcist II: The Heretic." That was his ~what was he thinking~ moment :P

31. Oh, I fogot about "the Hiliritic"
And while we're at it... Ever see Blatty's first film, the Ninth Configuration?

What a load of quasi-intellectual/religious pseudo-melodramatic shit! I've been trying to watch it for a week, but it's so bad I can only sit through about ten minutes at as time. I want to see the ending, though, because apparently is has Jesus on the Moon.

35. the only other thing Blatty directed
was "Exorcist III." Maybe they won't let him near a camera now. :P

I missed "Ninth Configuration."

From IMDB: A new commanding officer, Col. Kane, arrives at a remote castle where apparently insane soldiers are incarcerated under psychiatric care. But all is not what it seems as Kane attempts to cure his men, whilst combating his own personal demons.

Sounds like good fodder for Ed Wood... now I'm interested :P

36. Don't bother...
It's a blatant ("blattyant"?) rip-off of Catch-22 and One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest, without any of the wit or intelligence, and with stereotypical "insanity" which would make Max Klinger look like a complex Bergmanesque study.

Is that really Married with Children's Ed O'Neill playing a cop at the end of the film? Seems to be some disagreement on this.
