7. It's right up there with all those annoying catchphrases
The ones you hear at work all the time - "on the same page", "moving forward...", "110 percent". After the first 600 repetitions, they cease to have any meaning.

10. It's almost as if they're applauding themselves
Look at me, I'm a wonderful person and what I say is splendid. :puke:

Even worse (in my humblest possible opinion) are those who clap early at concerts so that one can't actually hear the end of the music. But then I think that anybody who makes noise during concerts (apart from the actual performers) should be dragged on stage and shot immediately.

Good jazz fans applaud a good solo.

22. Absolutely
It's definitely more a classical music thing. The applause in jazz punctuates throughout the piece following the various improvisations.

Applause in classical music should only begin after all sound has died away, the final few moments of music (and indeed the moment following the last note) frequently being the most sublime.

27. Except In "Catcher In The Rye"
Remember how Holden got really upset in the jazz club when people clapped at the wrong parts? That makes me mad too!

People will hear the solo and clap when it's over, but they missed, for instance, the incredibly drumming that just happened under the piano solo, or the interplay between the piano player and bassist when the sax player is playing.

The really cool parts are often the parts they weren't even listening to, and they clap anyway.

I don't remember a lot of that book, and i never cared that much for it, but that really stuck in my head.

31. I didn't read it, but I saw "Conspiracy Theory"
I'm spoiled. Grew up in NYC and was schooled at The Vanguard, Gate, Slug's, Five-Spot, Half-Note, Metropole.

Half the audience were musicians and the other half were jazz critics. My childhood ambition (after tap dancer) was to be a reviewer for Downbeat Magazine.

I always think they must feel pretty uncomfortable speaking to people if they have to clap their hands to wrap up the conversation.

Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 02:49 PM by petronius
the clap is supposed to make you think of football players leaving the huddle or something like that. (The subsequent hand-rubbing is just an unconscious expression of pure soul-sucking evil...)
