| Of Barbara Jordan and hopelessly clueless teachers. I'm so scared. |
|
I went to pick my daughter up just now. She has a doctor appointment in a bit. Since they were nearing the end of a lesson, I just stood over by the door and waited. The teacher was pointing to a list of names on the board: George W. Bush George H.W. Bush Barbara Bush Laura Bush Eisehower Kay Bailey Hutchinson Kay Granger She told them they had to choose one of these governmental leaders from Texas and do a report on them. My daughter raised her hand and said "Can I do Barbara Jordan?" The teacher had no idea who that was so my teacher gave her a brief run-down. The teacher said "I don't know, I've never heard of her, you might not be able to find much on her." My daughter told her she has a book about her at home and she could bring it. The teacher just said "Well, I don't know..." Then another child (whom I happen to know is also the child of Democrats) said "What about LBJ? He was a government leader from Texas, he was president!" The teacher said "oh yeah" and walked over and wrote "JOHNSTON" on the board. The child said "There's no 't' it's just 'Johnson.'" Wow. So it remains to be seen whether my daughter will be allowed to do her report on Barbara Jordan, someone she really admires. If she is not allowed to, I will go up there and have a conference with the teacher. After all, the criteria is "governmental leader FROM Texas" and I see three on that list who don't even qualify. And how are Babs and Pickles government leaders anyway?

And I can't understand a teacher who won't let kids expand on other kids' knowledge. Well, that's assuming it's an in-class report. Maybe it's just a regular report, and since the teacher doesn't know about her, she'd have to learn about her in order to grade it sufficiently? (heaven forbid)

They are the only ones on the list never elected to office. I was SO damn scared. It's moments like that that I think "We have GOT to get the hell out of here." But sometimes I think my daughter gets challenged because she's always thinking around, behind and above her teachers to try to see what they missed. That's a bit sad, if you ask me.

| 30. She could do this for a report on Eisenhower.... |
|
Here are some quotes she could use from Eisenhower.
I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its stupidity.
All of us have heard this term 'preventative war' since the earliest days of Hitler. I recall that is about the first time I heard it. In this day and time... I don't believe there is such a thing; and, frankly, I wouldn't even listen to anyone seriously that came in and talked about such a thing.
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.
This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience…we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

are her GT (Gifted and Talented) teachers. Both of them are big Democrats (though they have the professionalism to hide it when teaching, I only know because I know them personally) and they are INCREDIBLE teachers. My daughter is with them more than her homeroom teacher (who didn't know it was Johnson and not Johnston).
The GT teachers teach them critical thinking skills, teach them to be open-minded, and explore MANY different topics on a pretty high level.
Unlike her other teacher.
So at least she has them. If it weren't for them and her wonderful art and music teachers (also great), I'd be completely despondent.

In the biographical sketch she could say things like "So AFTER he was busted for drunken driving..." and "Once he gave up his cocaine habit (or so he says),..."
BWA!!! She looked at me like I was crazy and said "Yeah and I'd totally get in trouble."

She'll add them. We're still trying to decide if she should do a slightly tongue in cheek bush report or a real Barbara Jordan report. Too bad she can't do both. I forgot to mention they have to do some kind of creative presentation. She got a friend of hers to agree to be a student Barbara Jordan (played by my daughter) teaches in a skit, and in return, my daughter has to play Kay Bailey Hutchinson while her friend interviews her. HOW is she going to do that? We have GOT to get her some good Hutchinson quotes! ROFL!

Oh, I mean, it's, not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"
No lie. if there's a hell, it's for people like her.

Barbara Jordan is one of my life heroes. It is astounding to me that Teacher thought she'd get away with her GOP talking points, and even more shocking that she had no idea who Barbara Jordan was. Has she had any interest in politics whatsoever in the past twenty-five years? Here's a link to her 1976 Democratic National Convention keynote address. http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/barbarajordand... In the meantime, I'd see her and raise her -- I'd try to contact Ann Richards' office and ask if the astounding Ms. Richards might want to drop by that classroom and give the teacher a wakeup call about the great Barbara Jordan... At the same time, Bouncy Ball, I am of the school that the worst thing you'll hear is "no" if you contact her office, tell the assistant about the class assignment, and ask for a little of Ms. Richards' time.
Somehow, I'm thinking that the amazing Ms. Richards might be wanting to rearrange her schedule to spend fifteen minutes giving that teacher an education about Barbara Jordan, a woman that continues to inspire. Baby Bouncy Ball should also get an "A" out of it.

the Bushes aren't from Texas and for the sake of fairness she ought to have a few Democrats on the list. Oh, and the omission of LBJ (the most prominent Texan politician in modern history, for good or ill) is fucking criminal. Or just hit her with a bat until she splatters. Personally, I'd use the bat. "Highly qualified teachers" my ass. If this is what NCLB is supposed to do for american schools I'm glad LK won't be in them!

It was 1988, and Michael Dukakis had just been nominated for President. The teacher was doing a unit on the election, and she wrote down the candidates' names on the board:
George Bush - Dan Quail Michael Duckacis - Loyd Bentson
I raised my hand and gave her the correct spelling - she was totally clueless, and I had to correct her!
Oh, and by the way, this was in 1st grade and I hadn't even turned 6 yet. That's pathetic.

I think this is part of a unit on Texas history, but most of the name she put up are so recent....????? My daughter is going to school tomorrow with a long list of Texas Democrats to make the teacher's list more balanced. And some of her names go back to people like John Nance Garner. So it's more historical. Her teacher's a farging idiot. We've had really bad luck this year, it's the second one she's had this year. The first was fired in January for proselytizing about Jesus to the class all the time.

She puts up a bunch of pukes...including fuckin first ladies...and doesn't even include Johnson? It's one thing to have a political bias. We all have them. It's another to show it so overtly in a class room.
I'm surprised the idiot didn't list DeLay up there. Your daughter should have done the report on him, and ripped him to shreds - it would be good to expose the people to what a piece of shit he is.

My 8th grade daughter has a couple of teachers who are less than "left". She gets back at them by ALWAYS finding a way to tie * into whatever topic she has to write about. It's a scream, actually, and sometimes I have to tell her she's reaching too far. I went to her parent/teacher conferences last week, and she had given me a sheet of paper with the names of her teachers on it. Next to 3 of the names she had written in red pen, really small "(freeper)". Cracked me up. Funny thing is, these teachers LOVED her. Said she was the most mature kid in the class, and could always be counted on to know her stuff! The english teacher was very much looking forward to her essay on the legalization of marijuana! One of the lines from her essay was "Don't believe me? Just google "Wead" and see what you find!" Lucky for us we're in a blue state, and they are checked insofar as what they can get away with!
