Ever been in a jail cell?
I'm not a felon but I've spent a little time (5-6 mos.) in lock-up in my 55 years. I can survive in an institutional setting.

Anyone else ever been in lock-up?

4. It really sucks. I would have been serving your meals-I was a trustee.
I worked in the kitchen (access to coffee!) the last time I was in jail (64 days;63 nights).

7. Far-out! A middle-aged auto dealer escaped during the summer of
1970 when a friend and I spent 90 days in jail together (a drug related story).

Those were my two jail experiences 90 days in 1970 and 64 days in 1998 on misdemeanors. I'm not a "criminal thinker". I have ethics. But I was locked-up a couple of times.

5. Three times, but never longer than overnight.
Interestingly enough, I've been to Myrtle Beach, SC three times, all while I was a student at UNC; and I was arrested every fucking time. Once for public display of alcohol (I stepped out of the Pavilion with a beer in my hand), once for "Riding on a portion of the vehicle not designed for passengers" (sitting on the trunk of an MGB), and once for indecent exposure and resisting arrest ( I got caught pissing under a pier at 3:00AM and when I called the cop who shined the light on me a fucking pervert, he added on the resisting charge.) Ah, youth.

20. nope, you're not the only one
I never had the opportunity to don the orange jumpsuit though. I was there for about 6 hours back in 85 or 86. I was arrested on DUI on my way home from work (I had stopped at the bar where my sister worked).

County jails are worse than prisons for the detainees. But you already knew that!

but my friend and I were drugged and in someone's car tripping on lsd.

11. Twice
Once for a protest in DC, then a lot longer on a bogus gun charge which got laughed out of court by a grand jury. My basic take on jail: IT SUCKS.

12. Only to visit
The course of my job has brought me to visit people in prisons and jails. In county jails, I usually visit within the area the cells are located, in prisons, I visit in the visiting room. I've also visited delinquents in youth homes and adults and kids in psych hospitals.

I'm 5'10" and not thin. If I was locked up with a bunch of women, I highly doubt any would seriously mess with me as I am much larger than most women. I also don't look for fights, and am generally a sharing person by nature, so possessions would not really be an issue for me.

19. Me too
One day in the '70s I was hitchhiking through Providence, RI, and the local police chief had just decided to get tough, so I was busted and held overnight in the drunk tank so I could see a judge in the morning. Fined $25 and costs.

Guy in the cell next to me had been stopped for driving drunk, and it turned out that the car he was driving didn't actually belong to him. He spent the night banging on the walls and mumbling, "Y'know what I shoulda done? I shoulda stolen a fuckin' TRUCK!"

There was also a guy with a long record of breaking and entering, who they'd picked up for possession of burglar tools (I forget what, it was actually something relatively trivial, although they wouldn't let you on an airplane with it nowadays).

Around midnight they brought in a college kid who was tripping, and had decided his clothes were interfering with his pending unity with the cosmos, so he removed them.

but that's only because I work for the juvenile corrections agency in Texas. I visit our facilities all the time and have been inside several of the youths' cells. It's really really good to know that when that door closes I'm gonna be on the outside. :)

35. Well I was a First Class Boy Scout in Troop 187 (N. 66th Street School)
in Milwaukee and I logged in 18 hours of solo in CAP there (Timmerman). I've been locked-up before despite my childhood experiences.

I've been voting since 1968. I ran a UFCW informational picket-line for 14 months.
I've put my ass on the line against RWer's and racists and been shot at 7 times as a civilian-I'm an American musician that's been in jail a couple of times. I've been an anti-fascist since 1965 though.

36. Hideous drunk tank in a small town
There are so many homeless people that they have to work hard to make it less nice than the streets. Most of the inmates are undocumented aliens (not drunk, usually) and the redneck deputies torture them all day by playing NASCAR races on cable at high volume. During the day you sit in rows of bucket seats. At night you share a cell with nothing in it but a toilet. I had about eight guys in my cell, all Mexicans waiting to go to immigration court. I curled up on the floor but the guards would wake us by banging nightsticks on the windows every ten minutes or so.

I'm sorry to all you law enforcement DUers but these deputies are complete shitheads. They actively belittle and tease you in what's already a sort of nightmarish situation. A number of them, incidentally, were just accused of raping a 21 year old college student in a nearby town. They found her nearly passed out at a bar, brought her home and raped her all night.
